RE: Confused about tcp_wrappers and sshd
by Styma, Robert E (Robert)
I just retested on FC3. The ssh that comes
with the standard repos does honor the
/etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files.
I am not real familiar with the HOSTDENY program,
but if it updates /etc/hosts.deny, ssh will
honor it. The tcpwrappers program also checks
/etc/hosts.deny and /etc/hosts.allow.
You can easily test this by hand.

RFT: update nvidia-glx packages for FC4 in livna
by Thorsten Leemhuis
Hi all!
I did a major update of the nvidia-glx packages for livna.org. The new
packages are available at:
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/4/i386/RPMS.lvn-testing/
(and hopefully soon in the x86_64 dir, too)
If you feel brave and want to help testing give them a try (The usual
rawhide warnings apply here; so run at your own risk; I everything is
fine those should be pushed to the normal livna-repository soon).
If you installed livna with the livna-release.rpm (
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/4/i386/RPMS.lvn/livna-release-4-0.lvn.5.4.noa...
) then the following command should work to install those drivers
easily:
yum --enablerepo=livna-testing install nvidia-glx kernel-module-nvidia-glx-$(uname -r)
BTW1: Those who want to get announcements when major updates/discussions
happen around the package now can add their e-mail address to the
nvidia-glx announce bug in the Livna bugzilla:
http://bugzilla.livna.org/show_bug.cgi?id=560
(sub BTW: for those interested in ati-fglrx: subscribe to
http://bugzilla.livna.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351)
BTW2: Upstream removed support for the following Cards/Chipsets in the
latest driver release afaik:
TNT2
TNT2 Pro
TNT2 Ultra
TNT2 Model 64 (M64)
TNT2 Model 64 (M64) Pro
Vanta
Vanta LT
GeForce 256
GeForce DDR
GeForce2 GTS
GeForce2 Pro
GeForce2 Ti
GeForce2 Ultra
GeForce2 MX Integrated graphics
Quadro
Quadro2 Pro
Quadro2 EX
You got one of this cards and want to continue to use the nvidia-driver
with a nvidia-glx-legacy.rpm from livna? Then send me (in private) a
small note and I'll consider such a package for the future.

RAID-1 (mirroring) disk failed; now what?
by Will Partain
FC3 machine, two disks, one mirrors the other. Software RAID.
Lovely. (Time passes.) The first disk (a Hitachi Deskstar 7K250, if
anyone cares) dies suddenly. The RAID software does the right thing
(more or less: the machine was unusable until after a reboot).
But now what? (Hint: a nice Fedora Docs topic; it's sorely
underdocumented in general :-) This article
[http://mark.foster.cc/articles/raid-rebuild.html] is an exception.)
Please advise if I've got any of the following wrong...
* Get RAID to "stand down" re the dead disk; something like...
("mdadm --query --detail /dev/md<whatever>" to get the facts...)
# mdadm /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sda1 --remove /dev/sda1
# mdadm /dev/md1 --set-faulty /dev/sda2 --remove /dev/sda2
# mdadm /dev/md2 --set-faulty /dev/sda5 --remove /dev/sda5
# mdadm /dev/md3 --set-faulty /dev/sda6 --remove /dev/sda6
* Which physical disk is the guilty party?
(Oooh, shoulda thought about this _much_ earlier...) OK, I've gotta
yank one disk out, now which one is it? They're identical; oops.
Well, it's the first one (/dev/sda, also logged as 'ata1'), so if I
look in the motherboard manual and find where SATA channel 0 is
connected, and follow that wire... that'll be right, won't it?
A better plan? -- take the cover off, fire the machine up, it's only
using one disk, right? -- so I feel which one is doing something,
and take out the other.
* Will the machine's GRUBness work when the disk is yanked and replaced?
I am about to replace what was /dev/sda with a fresh disk. Has GRUB
got hidden secrets, e.g. in the MBR, such that it won't boot without
the expected first disk?
Even though the machine was RAID-1'd from day one, its grub.conf
includes the comment...
#boot=/dev/sda1
... which is worrying.
Or should I expect to boot in with the rescue CD, get the RAID stuff
tidied up, and only then get back to normal booting?
* Yank old, put in new disk.
(*Mark* it as '/dev/sda' or whatever, for future reference!)
* Getting the right partitioning on the replacement disk.
Seems straightforward:
# sfdisk -d /dev/sdb > /tmp/my-disk-partitioning
# edit /tmp/my-disk-partitioning, replacing 'sdb' with 'sda'
# sfdisk /dev/sda < /tmp/my-disk-partitioning
* Telling the RAID gubbins of its new friends:
This should be plain sailing...
# mdadm /dev/md0 --add /dev/sda1
# mdadm /dev/md1 --add /dev/sda2
# mdadm /dev/md2 --add /dev/sda5
# mdadm /dev/md3 --add /dev/sda6
Any looming disasters in all of that? Assuming non-trivial feedback,
I will summarize back to the list. Thanks!

Gnome Pilot/Evolution crash
by Paul Lemmons
This may be off topic. I am not sure.
I am using Evolution as my email client. I am using the exchange
connector (there is room for improvement but it works). The next step
for me is to get my Pilot (Clie actually) to synch with Evolution. I am
not having any luck. I am hoping that someone else has.
Scenario:
1. Open Evolution
2. Select Pilot Settings from Tools
3. Gnome-Pilot opens up
4. Leave name as "Cradle"
Leave port as /dev/pilot
Leave speed at 57600
Change connection to USB
5. Forward->
6. Yes, I have used sync... is selected
7. Forward->
8. Press "HotSynch" button
9. ERROR The Application "gpilotd" has quit unexpectedly ... blah blah
blah.
I have started gpilotd from the command line and it does not appear to
be communicating with it. It starts without error and keeps running with
no messages generated by the error. It is my thought that the
gnome-pilot configuration program is not able to talk to the daemon. I
am guessing, though.
Environment:
FC4 2.6.12
Evolution 2.2.3
gpilotd 2.0.13

Does anyone know a program to edit svg files? I know that the Gimp can IMPORT

Feedback invited for Inspiron 6000 w/ ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X300 64MB HyperMemory™
by Reshat Sabiq
I ended up going for upper-medium lower-high end, which is what i think
this laptop is.
I'd appreciate any feedback on it. One thing i'm anticipating is that
xorg won't work right off (not 3D anyway), and that i'll need to get
proprietary ATI driver. Could somebody confirm if it works well? ATI
appears to have made a good effort on that driver, but that's just my
impression from their website.
P.S. Btw., for those who are looking, Dell appears to have a good deal
on this laptop till 08/31. It's the best deal i found for those specs.
If you are looking at the $850 range, the best deal i found there is HP
Pavillion ze2000t (i looked at deals w/ S-Video only) .
Thanks.

Internet Explorer 6 under Wine
by Marcus Zingmark
Trying to install IE6 under Wine, running Fedora Core 4, wondering if
there is something I have to do to open internet access for Wine or so?
I get the message that the installation couldn't download all components
needed for the installation. It seems like it wont connect at all.
Otherwise, how do I install IE6 using Wine, would be great to know ;)
Thanks.

snmp versus /proc
by Timothy Murphy
I've been looking (not very hard) at RRD (round-robin database),
and I notice that several examples displaying things like memory usage
use snmp (more precisely snmpwalk) to gather the information.
I'm just wondering if this still makes sense.
Most of the information seems to be available in /proc ,
and I wondered if it is just conservatism
that leads people to keep on with snmp ?

How to unpack DVD movie to edit it's video/sound?
by Strong
I wrote recently, but did get any respond, trying to rewrite another
way...
I have a DVD movie, that needs to be edited: video and sound.
Thus the question is: what software i should use to unpack from its
format to the format that will be operable for the video audio
processing as the next step?
Finally, i want to compile it in DVD format again. So, it will be nice
to loose its quality minimally. Big thanks, for Your solutions!
