recompile php-mysql
by Eric Wagar
I see that there is source for php4, which I would assume would be all
of php, including the mysql so.
Since the mysql portion is broken up and provided as php-mysql in Fedora
releases, how do I go about recompiling the php-mysql for use with MySQL
4/4.1? The one included < FC4 is compiled for MySQL 3.23. I use MySQL
4.1, so I need an updated php-mysql to properly work with the DB.
Thanks

FC3: Java and 2.6.12-1.1372 FC3smp
by "Peter Müller"
Hi,
with kernel 2.6.12-1.1372_FC3smp no Java-Application (DBVisualiser, MKS,
JBoss) is able to create a network-connection to another server/database.
All other (native) applications are running without any problems. Any hint's
!?
with best regards

Bugs in new kernels
by Lloyd Hayes
Well, I got fed up with the bugs in Fedora Core 4 and put Fedora Core 3
back on my computer.
FC3 came out a year ago. One of the first things that I noticed was that
some of newer programs did not work well with the Selinx policies.
Updating the software took sever hours. (All night)
This morning, after all of the downloading, I was almost required to
install the new kernel first.
After that, the bugs of FC4 showed up. They had not been there from the
original kernel on the installation CD. They showed up after installing
the new kernel. It appears that the bugs associated with FC4 are related
to the new kernels being used. The same bugs show up in FC3 when the
latest kernel is applied.

Can FC4.ppc be installed on an iBook withOUT OSX??
by Beartooth
cross-posted to gmane.linux.yellowdog.general and
gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general; followups set to
gmane.linux.redhat.fedora.general
I have a G3 iBook which has had no slightest vestige of OSX since I hosed
that (on purpose, with great glee) when upgrading YDL 2.3 to 3.0; and wild
horses couldn't've dragged me to putting it back when I replaced YDL 3.0
with YDL 4.0. It has run fine all that time.
But I have downloaded ISOs twice, and burned CD3 three times, always
checking sha sums, and using k3b with slightly different settings -- two
of them including Verify Written, which i believe checks md5 sums.
Out of all my attempts, most won't even boot into the FC4 install; the
one time one did, it couldn't get past the first CD.
Some of the trouble came from my initial attempt to tinker with the apple
bootstrap partition; Fedora told me Don' Nebber Do Dat, and I *thought* I
had UNdone it; but maybe not.
Anyway, even with CDs that can hardly have any problem I've yet heard of,
and knowing not to touch the fershlugginer partition, I can't get FC4 to
do anything more than mess up the machine -- to the point where I have to
get out my Terrasoft YDL4 CDs and reinstall that to be able even to boot.
I'm wondering if by any chance the people who produced FC4.ppc imagined
that anyone wanting it would have OSX, and never realized that some of us
(possibly even a majority of those ready to try FC4.ppc on sight) would
long since have gotten rid of OSX.
Could that vile thing be? Or am I barking up yet another wrong tree?
(I'm beginning to think of applying the big hammer -- a sixteen-pound
sledgehammer -- after setting the iBook on a convenient solid stump ....)

WARNING:DO NOT UPGRADE TO CORE 4
by Steven W. Orr
The problems with it are a mile long and I'm very disappointed that I
upgraded my home machine.
* I run Majordomo2 which is a great mailinglist manager. Not all my
mail is getting delivered and I'm getting messages with blank
bodies. No one else seems to be having this problem. I'm not sure
what I can do now. It could be perl, or worse, it could be gcc
which was used to build perl.
* I have a Palm IIIc connected on a serial port. pilot-link woks ok
but all software that uses pilot-link (jpilot, kpilot, gnome-pilot)
are all unable to connect to the device. No one knows why. I
suspect gcc.
* I have a Dell Dimension 4700 at work. The upgrade went fine from
Core 3 to 4. Afterwards, I went to start X and it failed. The
xorg.conf file was identical both before and after the upgrade,
including after running system-config-display --configure. The fix,
after a team of people poured 6 hours into it was to not use the
VESA driver that it used before. The correct choice is to use the
i810 driver. The writeup for it is here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=162699
I've had good and bad upgrade experiences before, but this is
killing me. My home machine is my domain server and it's been pretty
badly crippled because of the mail problems. I can still use my palm
but it's a new experience in being crippled.

No, no and no. It is a quite freshly installed FC4 with almost 100GB free on the /home-partition.
Should definitely not run out of anything.
But thanks for the answer!

FC4: backspace does not work in vi
by Alexander Volovics
What happened to 'backspace' in vi.
This works as it should in 'gnome-terminal' but backspace
in vi in an xterm gives ''.
To get backspace with vi in an xterm I have to use "ctrl-h".
Backspace was working perfectly using vi in an xterm under FC2/3.
