RE: FC4 sound card correctly detected, but no sound
by Shantanu Shah
I had a similar problem on FC4 Dell Inspiron 700m. I
solved it by using the following method. Let me know
if it works for you.
# To enable sound from your laptop, run #alsamixer.
# Scroll to the rightmost colum using the right arrow
and hit m. (i.e. turn it on)
# Exit the program by pressing Esc. Sound should now
be working.

I Have FC4 (kernel 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) installed in a
DELL Inspiron
600m. The sound card is Intel Corporation
82801DB/DBL/DBM
(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97. It was detected correctly
and the module
snd-intel8x0 was installed during the installation and
later soundcard
detection. But when I press the "play test sound"
button, no sound can
be heard. The speaker is not muted. Any idea what went
wrong?
Appreciate it.

which drive is it?
by V Krish
I have three external USB drives connected to an AMD
machine running FC3. These are mounted as follows:
/dev/sda1 on /mnt/usb1
/dev/sdb1 on /mnt/usb2
/dev/sdc1 on /mnt/usb3
Is there some way to figure out which physical drive
is mounted on /mnt/usb2 so I can pull that one out
after a umount (short of disconnecting each in turn)?
Thank you,
Krish

Set initial size of gnome-terminal?
by Tony Nelson
(One more time, only.)
I'd like to set the initial size of gnome-terminal to, say, 120x40. There
doesn't seem to be a way to do this in the gnome-terminal profile or
through gconf-editor. To use the --geometry command line switch I'd have
to update every place I click to open a terminal (and I don't even know
where those places' settings are kept).

I am running Gnome. I was thinking of installing
gnome-bluetooth but don't know if this will allow me
to use hcitool or if I would have to do all my
bluetooth related actions through gnome-bluetooth??

Downgrading to PHP4?
by liu chang
Hi, I recently upgraded my web server to FC4. Unfortunately many mambo
components (such as advanced registration) that we depend on do not
seem happy with PHP5. Any suggestions how I should go about
downgrading to PHP4? Can I just uninstall PHP5 and install the PHP4
that comes with FC3? Anyone having the same problem and has a better
solution? Thank you very much.

make dvd install iso from fc4 cds...
by Oliver Leitner

Hi guys
I have a question regarding the 4 cds of fc4.
i just downloaded the 4 isos, which took me 4 days at my line, and now i
just saw that theres a dvd image, off course i dont wanna download the
dvd iso, but instead use the cd images ive got.
now my question:
since i got no cdrs currently laying around, but some dvdr's, im
thinking about making a dvd iso from the 4 cdrs.
has anyone yet tried that? or is there a tutorial or readme on how to do it?
id be thankful for any tip into the right direction.
ps: if i copy all files from the isos into one root dir and make an iso
image out of it (mkisofs...) does that work?, what did i need to look
for for the boot record? etc...
Greetings

I would like to add my thanks as well to all the developers that are involved in this project -- I am using fedora 3 on 6 servers here at the school, and it is working wonderfully -- Any problems that I have are mine -- not yours!!! Thanks and keep up the good work

Re: FC3 mediacheck
by Erik Hemdal

I think this comment was from Satish about ide=nodma. Why is that
necessary? I've encountered the mediacheck failures similarly for the
first time ever. If the drive operates normally, why do we need nodma
in order to check only disk2 and disk3 of the CD set?
I'm not intending this as disrespectful to anyone; I'm truly curious
about it. Out of the four install images, all four pass the MD5
checksum test, and two out of four pass the mediacheck. On my CD
writer, cdrecord reports that the buffer was always adequately filled
and burnfree protection was never needed. So assuming the integrity of
the media is OK (seems to be, since cdrecord reports no errors and the
CD is readable), I'd suspect a problem with the original ISO image.
Whether you use DMA or not on your drive doesn't seem to have any
bearing on things....else other I/O would have trouble too.
Am I missing something?

[FC3] How to get bluetooth to work?
by VB
I am running Fedora Core 3 on a Toshiba Portege M200
laptop with built-in bluetooth. I see bluetooth and
toshiba_acpi as loaded modules but when I try 'hcitool
dev', I do not see any devices.

I cannot get back to KDE
by Antonio Olivares
Dear folks,
I shutdown one of my computers and when I turned it
back on I get:
Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you
have not logged out yourself, this could mean that
there is ome installation program or that you many be
out of diskspace. Try logging in with one of the
failsafe sessions to see if you can fix this problem.
Other than reinstalling everyting, is there a simpler
way to fix this problem.
Sorry to bother you again,
Antonio
