Upgrade to FC4 from FC3 without having to re download and then burn cds and recreate partition?
by Sam Johnson
Hello,
I am very excited about the soon release of Fedora Core 4. However, I
want to upgrade from Fedora Core 3 in an easier way than doing the
procedure that is required for the first install you do, downloading
all of the ISOs, then burning them to discs, and then use Disk Druid
to erase partition (and all of my lovely data) and recreate it.
I hear of alot of people saying that they upgraded, and am curious
about how it is done.
Thank you,

sshd:cipher_encrypt: bad plaintext length 337 [Failed}: ( second time post)
by Ankush Grover
hey friends,
I have again have to post my problem on the list as so far i haven't
been able to solve the problem.I even mailed to the OpenSSh list but
so far not response from their side.
The SSH service on my FC3 server is having some problem.
Let me explain why this happened:
I was trying to authenticate with the public keys to my CVS server
through Wincvs on Windows XP Sp2.I have installed cygwin and openssh
for cygwin on windows.I configured my CVS server for SSH
authentication with password but later on when I tried to make it run
with key based access the problem with SSH started.
Now everytime I try to start the SSH service
service sshd start it gives the error:
sshd:cipher_encrypt: bad plaintext length 337 [Failed}:
Alexandar responded to my mail earlier and asked me run few commands
and post the result of the commands over here
1) $ egrep -v '^$|^#' /etc/ssh/sshd_config
the output of this egrep is below
ListenAddress 0.0.0.0
SyslogFacility AUTHPRIV
LogLevel INFO
PasswordAuthentication yes
ChallengeResponseAuthentication no
GSSAPIAuthentication yes
GSSAPICleanupCredentials yes
UsePAM yes
X11Forwarding yes
Subsystem sftp /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
2) I ran dos2unix command on sshd_config ,but nothing changed.
3) The output of strace -x /etc/init.d/sshd start
I have only posted the output which was in "Red Color".
write(1, "FAILED", 6FAILED) = 6
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, NULL, [], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
write(1, "\33[0;39m", 7) = 7
4) the output of bash -x /etc/init.d/sshd start
I have only posted the output which was in "Red Color".
+ echo -n FAILED
FAILED+ '[' color = color ']'
+ echo -en '\033[0;39m'
I search on google for this error there was something on it that
sometimes there are some $ in the sshd_config .I removed all the extra
$ signs but still the problem is persisting.
Can anybody tell me the solution for this.Failing to get any solution
will force me to start the telnet service as sometimes i need to
login into my server from home .Starting telnet service is like
opening a door for thiefs.
Thanks & Regards

CD Device Handler???
by Morgan Read
Hi,
In my gnome login (not others) the little CD icon (named "CD Device
Handler") fails to show up.
Is this anything other than a pretty picture? How can I find out what's
not happening, if anything, and make it happen?
If it is only pretty picture, how can I get it back anyway? - 'cause I
like pretty pictures!
Thanks all.
Regards,
Morgan.

re: tcp_wrappers_7.6
by Jude DaShiell
I was told to be careful of what linux distros supply as tcp_wrappers
since some of them supply cut down versions. I'll check out what's here
and find out if the full system was already supplied in a few minutes.

Failing drive?
by Ashley M. Kirchner
Someone with more knowledge about these things please tell me if I'm
looking at a failing drive, or something else. SMART hasn't reported
anything on the drive (in fact, it thinks the drive is in perfect health
when I do a manual check.)

Removing old kernels with yum?
by WipeOut
Hi,
How do I remove old kernels with yum??
If I do a..
# yum list "kernel*"
I get..
Installed Packages
kernel.i686 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 installed

kernel.i686 2.6.10-1.760_FC3 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.11-1.27_FC3 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.9-1.678_FC3 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.9-1.667 installed
kernel.i686 2.6.10-1.737_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.9-1.667 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.10-1.760_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.11-1.27_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.10-1.737_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.11-1.14_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.9-1.678_FC3 installed
kernel-smp.i686 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 installed
kernel-utils.i386 1:2.4-13.1.49_FC3 installed
So if I try..
# yum remove kernel.i686
it wants to remove all of them..
I have tried specifying the version a couple of ways but then it doesn't
find anything to remove..
So how do I do it?
Thanks

WEB Cam Server
by Amichai Rotman
Hi All,
I would like to setup a WebCam server for a relative of mine who
started a kindergarden.
He wants to be able to see who is comming / passing outside for
security and ID purposes.
I thought I could install some WebCam server distro on an old PIII
machine, connect a couple of USB WebCams to it, hook it to a broadband
internet connection and - presto !
I thought it would be cool to offer the parents to take a peek at
their kids while theyŕe napping...
Any suggestions?
* Hardware Configuration (WebCams, PC)
* Distro, Software...
* Tips / Tricks / Pitfalls
Thanks,

FC3 on a VirtualPC needs PPTP support...
by Bo Berglund
I installed Fedora Core in a VirtualPC box on an XP-Pro with 1 gig
RAM.
It has been done because I need both Windows and Linux development
environments basically at the same time.
But to get at the sources from the Linux box I also need CVS access to
the corporate server and this can only happen if I am inside the local
LAN via a VPN tunnel. CVS is not channeled through the firewall.
The VPN tunnel is served by a Windows2000 server with RRAS and it
implements the PPTP protocol.
So my best guess is that I should install PPTP support into FC3 and
then go from there. I found this link in previous posts:
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-fedora-core-3.phtml
Here one of the early steps is to get a new kernel:
kernel_ppp_mppe-0.0.5-2dkms.noarch.rpm
However, in order to make FC3 run at all inside a Virtual PC box I had
to install a kernel update already. Instructions were given here:
http://vpc.visualwin.com/Notes/FedoraCore.3.Final.html
and in step #43 one does this:
rpm -i --force kernel-2.6.9-vpc.i686.rpm
which I believe will install a new kernel (correct me if I am wrong).
What I am worried about now is if the PPTP install procedure will
invalidate the VirtualPC kernel stuff so that I won't be able to use
FC3 in VPC anymore...
And I don't like to start over like I have had to do several times
already just to get Linux going inside the VPC shell. So I am trying
to avoid a self-destruct here.
Anyone any ideas?
And please forgive if the questions sound dumb, I am not used to Linux
at all being a mainly Windows programmer...
