How to make an install boot disk for Fedora?
by Neal Wilkinson
My wife has agreed to go Fedora and so I want to get her machine up and
running. She has a CDROM that won't boot. On the FC3 install disk there
is a bootdisk.img file but it is not designed to be used on a floppy but
something larger. I have nothing larger. My machine doesn't have a
burner. I've also run across a command that you are supposed to be able
to use after a boot from a dos disk that is "loadlin autoboot\vmlinuz
initrd=autoboot\initrd.img but I don't see loadlin on the CD and nothing
called autoboot either, however, there is an initrd.img file. Also, the
place I found that said there would be a "dosutils" directory on the CD
and there isn't. Thanks for your help.

HELP!! "init 3" freezes after "Starting anacron"
by Gustavo Seabra
Hi,
I'm trying to get to init 3 in a laptop. I open a shell, su -, then
type "init 3". Then it only prints 4 lines:
Starting irqbalance [ OK ]
Starting lm_sensors [ OK ]
Starting automount: No Mountpoints Defined [ OK ]
Starting anacron: [ OK ]
_
and then it freezes after that. The cursor just keeps blinking in the
begginng of the next line, and never goes beyond this point. Any
ideas?
Thanks,

Adding a new printer in FC2
by Deboo ^
What do I need to to in order to add a new printer under fedora. And
how to add it by editing the config files, rather than the gui, so
that I could understand the behind-the-curtain things that happen.

Confused by YUM (repomd
by clemens@dwf.com
Im confused.
Im trying (and now suceeding) to use YUM with a LOCAL repository.
It seems that the YUM distributed with Fedora3 wants to use the
new REPOMD description of the repository, but having looked at all
of the sources available at duke, I dont see ANY description of
how to generate this info. Everything still refers to yum-arch
which generates the old /headers stuff.
Ive been able to backup to a version of yum that still uses the old
repository info, but where is the description of how to generate
the new stuff? AND with what program?
Grump.

Won't boot to X after install
by neidorff
Hi folks,
This is about a fresh install of FC3 that won't boot into X to
complete the install (post install steps).
The system:
1.8 GHz Athlon XP
ASUS A7V333 mb
1 Gig ram
Buslogic 958 SCSI controller
18 Gig SCSI drive (seagate)
NVIDIA graphics 64Mb (I forgot which chip it is, but it is AGP 4X)
Downloaded & verified the FC3 CDs. Booted CD 1 and tested all media.
All passed. Then, installed onto a clean HDD. I selected my packages
(custom install) and install proceeded without problem. At the end of
the install, it asked me to reboot. I did. The system came up to the
point of a grey screen with a large mouse pointer. No desktop loaded.
I checked the consoles and they showed no errors. I created 3
partitions: 1--boot (500Mb) 2--home (10Gig) 3--/ (7.5Gig or so). I
can mount these partitions from my RH 7.3 installation, and it shows
that none of them filled up.
Will someone please help me fix this system so that it can boot and I
can configure it?
Many thanks,
Mark

fluxbox installation
by gary manulat
halu,
im nu to fedora. im currently using fedora core 2 with gnome on it.i only
want to ask the following questions.
1. does fedora core 2 cd comes with fluxbox package?
2. if yes, how would i search the package and install it?
3. how to install source rpm of fluxbox?
ive downloaded fluxbox..blah.src.rpm and issue the following command
root# rpm -ihv fluxbox..blah.src.rpm
after the command i got some warnings like.
#warning...blah......-using root
#**************************(100%)
#
i've tried to verify if the said package is installed by issuing the command
root# rpm -q fluxbox
and got the msg:
# fluxbox not installed
ive read in some tutorial that new redhat distro need to rebuild a source
rpm to install it and the command is # rebuild --rebuild packagename.src.rpm
so, ive issued the command:
root# rebuild --rebuild fluxbox..blah.src.rpm
and saw the expected outputs...but, as i tried to confirm if it is really
installed ive got this.
root# rpm -q fluxbox..blah.src.rpm
fluxbox not installed.
thats all...and please help me with my problem...

There is a jumper on the motherboard that disables the onboard sound.
See your motherboard manual, page 28. If you do not have it download it
from the ASUS site. It is called (Audio_En) the jumper needs to be put
on pins 2 and 3 to diable the sound. It is on the lower edge of the board.

Latest perl.x86_64 conflicts
by Leopoldo Olmos
The latest perl update (perl.x86_64 3:5.8.5-11.FC3 and perl-
suidperl.x86_64 3:5.8.5-11.FC3.1) conflicts with file from package
perl-5.8.5-9.
What would be the best solution? rpm -e or wait for a new refurbished
package?

GUI login screen
by Thufir
X Windows has a neat ctrl-alt-backspace to kill x windows, which I've
used from time to time. currently I have a boot level of 3(?), just to
a terminal login, after which I enter startx.
it's vaguely coming back, but how's the boot level adjusted to boot
into, IIRC, blue curve? and, will ctrl-alt-backspace still work?
thanks,

what 'user' are acpi scripts run as? Forcing DCOP to look at current user?
by Birt, Jeffrey
In the process of getting my acpi script just right I'm trying to use DCOP to turn on/off the kdesktop screensaver setting.
Working with DCOP I've discoverd that each user seems to have their own DCOP server. Running dcop from a regular console give a diffrent list of DCOP enabled processes than a root console.
I am assuming that the acpi scripts are run as 'system' (or what ever the Linux equivelent is) and therefore any DCOP related calls are looking at the 'systems' DCOP server not the current user.
So, can I force a script to run as another user? that is have the acpi script which is being run as 'system' call another script as the current user?
Thanks,
...confused and tired.........
