Twinview and the kde panel
by Endy
Hey all,
I'm using Nvidia's twinview and kde with both monitors running at
1024x768. However, one of the monitors can handle resolutions higher
than that, but everytime I have tried to set that monitor to higher
resolutions, the kde taskbar will not stretch across the bottom of both
screens. I have played around with all of the taskbar's settings. It
will stretch across both screens if the taskbar positioned along the top
of the desktop. Anyone know how I can get the taskbar to spread across
both of them on the bottom when running two different resolutions?

RE: Fedora, ALSA and MIDI OH MY! (Theme to lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!)
by Dan Thurman
Thanks for responding!
Yes, I have tried Timidity. It does not work. Timidity has core
dumped (segmentation fault) a couple times. I think the problem is
at a lower level -- involving the devices - it appears to be something
that is not activating the midi hardware interface or so I think.
Kind regards,
Dan

Have you tried timidity? I have played midi files using that. The
current timidity is in this rpm:
timidity++-2.13.0-3
If you don't have it you can get it using yum.

K3B DVD burn and md5sum
by Srinivasan S
Hi
I downloaded the FC4T2 dvd and md5 checked the iso .. identical md5sum, fine so far. Then I used K3B to burn the image .. I use a BENQ DVD writer under FC3.
After booting on a new machine when I did a media check it failed. Anyway I went ahead and installed it and it installed fine, no issues at all. Out of curiosity I popped in the disc into the writer and issued a md5sum /dev/hda and got a value that was different from the iso md5 .. I popped in the disc on the other machine and did a md5sum /dev/hda again and got an identical value. But this value is different from the published iso md5.
ANy reasons why this is different (thought the values should be identical) .. maybe same reason the Fedora install media check fails but installs correctly without issues.

URGENT HELP! I messed up the monitor configs, and now I can't start x!
by Gustavo Seabra
Hi,
I was experimenting with the monitor configurations, and now when I
boot I can't start in graphical mode! I am taken back to a text-only
login, and if I login and try 'startx' I get the error below. One of
the things I tried was to try to allow for a normal crt monitor along
with the laptop screen. Is that the problem? How do I get back to
normal???
Thank you very much!
I put here both the error and the config file:

How can I use the advanced search more effectively, so that I will be less a pain?
by Herschel
I attempted to limit my search to Fedora Core 3 and updates using: the
search string "Core 3" AND update. Nonetheless, the first item in the
list was for Fedora Core 1 ...
There are just too many hits that are seemingly randomly ordered by date
to be certain what I am encountering has not been previously answered.
So forgive me if this is repetitious.
The install went fairly well on an older IBM laptop that previously
"worked" with Mandrake 9.1 Pro. After connecting to the Internet I
began to be bothered by the notice indicating I should update the Fedora
Core 3 installation. Despite all variations, no matter combination and
no matter how small the list of selected packages, at the end of the
load I receive a message of failing to find a critical package. It is
of the form:
"Error while attempting to retrieve the package [insert the name
selected] ...
The message was:
An HTTP error occurred:
URL: http: [gives what appear to be reasonable web site locations]
Status Code: 404
Error Message: Not Found"
I tried to update emacs alone, bash, Firefox as well as part of the
kernel and in every case I ran into this form of failure. I have heard
too often about the ability to update Fedora to not think something I
am doing is at fault. What dumb thing am I doing that is causing me
this grief?

Forcing Screen Resolution
by disguised.jedi@gmail.com
How can I force the desktop to use 1024x768 screen resolution. I can't
select a monitor in the list for some reason, the OK button is disabled.
Therefore, I'm restricted to the 800x600 or 640x480 resolution. My laptop
dual-boots XP Home, and it can use that resolution, but that is the maximum.
Thanks for help in advance!

Also check "man anacron" and "man anacrontab". anacron handles running
cron jobs that gets missed while the machine is turned off. You are
probably seeing these cron jobs run from anacron if you are turning your
laptop off at night. Those cron jobs normally would run early in the AM
unless you turn the machine off, then they will run at some scheduled
interval after the machine is next turned on, from /etc/anacrontab. You
could reduce the frequency they run by moving the cron job from
cron.daily to cron.weekly or cron.monthly and leaving the machine on
during that time period, then those jobs won't run from anacron and
everything will be more up2date(though not on a daily basis)!

Install themes on FC3
by Sam Johnson
Hello,
I am trying to install the Clearlooks metacity theme. When I drag the
theme's tarball file into the install theme dialog, the tarball appears
in the field, but whe I click OK, the theme does not appear in the
window. I am acquiring the theme from Gnome-Look.org.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
