I uninstalled FC's MySQL and downloaded/installed the Linux x86 RPMs
from the MySQL site
I just got a DVD writer for my FC 3 machine so I could ghost the
entire drive. I have Norton Ghost 2003. I remember having no
problems ghosting other Linux distros. When I try to ghost this time,
however, it errors at the start with a read sector failure. Is this a
known issue? Ghost 2003 should work with ext3 filesystems just fine.
Are there any other good ghosting progs? I have used "g4u" with
FreeBSD and it is real nice; however, I'd rather have something to
backup an entire hard-drive right on to a DVD.

I'm having a disappearing modem problem. I put in the computer, it gets
recognized by kudzu, and it comes up working. I use it to dial in to an
old mainframe. Kermit sees it, and I have ProComm for DOS running under
dosemu. All seems well. I shut down the computer, and when it comes back
up, it has disappeared. So far, I've only been able to recover it by
removing it and rebooting, and then reinstalling it and rebooting. It
seemed to be a problem with a lockfile earlier on, but, that's no longer
the case. Can anyone offer an idea? I've searched the list and read the
configuration manuals from Redhat, but there is precious little said
about modems for old-style dialup.

my email arrives at my server and gets filtered into the appropriate
directories with procmail - all is well.
I then use Evolution or KMail depending on the mood of the day to read/send
messages (using IMAP, not POP so that the stuff stays on the server) and all
is still well, or so it seems. Until I started to investigate my disk space
that is, and why there are only 2 GB left on the 40 GB laptop drive.
What I found is a little astonishing: all mails get copied to the laptop from
the server so that I now have 3 copies of everything: 1: server, 2:
Evolution, 3: KMail - so if I was to eventually move to Thunderbird, provided
they sort the addressbook import using vcards out one day, I will have #4
copy sitting around.
Since I have no intention of deleting anything on the server, matters will
gradually get worse, I guess. My question is:
Is there a way to tell the IMAP client (Evolution or KMail) to NOT bring the
messages over, the header would be perfectly fine?
I can limit the damage by using only Evolution - but it's fonts are so
rediculously large under KDE and the laptop screen real-estate is somewhat in
high demand, so smaller is better.
I'm curious about something... are the up2date package header files that
are stored in /var/spool/up2date needed for anything, or can I clear
them out to conserve space on my hard drive?

Seems I had this problem when compiling a custom kernel for an
a7n8x board recently. hdparm couldn't enable the dma either. It
finally worked after adding the correct IDE driver (amd/nforce)
for that mobo. Until I corrected the problem disk performance
was quite poor.

You may need to compile a custom kernel with the correct driver for
your motherboard. Or perhaps get try an updated kernel.

I've just setup a printer where I'm doing some contracting. The printer is a
DELL Laser printer P1500.
It's an ip network printer. I went to System ettings --->Printing
and setup a new printer as a 'Networked JetDirect' queue type.
I provided the i.p. address as the printer and left the default port of 9100.
Next I selected Dell as the manufacturer and i only see two options:
M5200 and S2500
I've tried both with the same behavior:
If I print from openoffice writer it works perfecty. If I print from Kate, or
Kmail the left margin (including some of th text on the left side of the
page) is cut off (i.e. the print image is shifted too far to the left on the

It seems in our case comercial CDs can be read on machines that can't
read CD+R CDs.
