Help Please: DNS Resolution Problem
by Sanjay Arora
Hi All
Installed my first Fedora machine on old PIII-550MHz system. Had
migrated to Whitebox Linux for Production machines but could not
resist going back to Fedora for my personal machine.
I am facing a peculiar problem...maybe I am missing the simplest thing
but here it is...I has a Realtek 8029AS Card...Did a FC3 ISO
install...Every time I switched the machine On, I had to activate
eth0...as it would automatically deactivate itself.
Then I changed to another Realtek 8032 or something similar card
(sorry am writing this from office so don't remember exact number). I
also updated the machine using yum yesterday (Everthing Install
option).
Now I have a different problem...my eth0 is active and the problem
does not remain, but I do not get DNS Resolution. DNS Server entries
are there in the Network Config GUI. Restarted the network service
after rewriting the DNS values in GUI and saving them again. But no
go.
One curious fact...my resolv.conf is empty...is this a change in
Fediora? I put my DNS Servers in Resolv.conf manually and again
restarted the network service but same results.
Where's the culprit....I have a vague feeling its me ;-)...I'm missing
something very small and obvious.
Please help.
Sanjay.

Re: OT:Perl, appending to @INC
by Mercury Morris
Back in December, 2004, Perl-Tk wouldn't run for me on an AMD64 system.
After Googling and searching, I found a fix. With the most recent rpm's for
Perl, Perl-Tk quit working for me again. This time it looks like
there was a change
to a filename from 'site-perl' to 'site_perl'.
Anyway, here's what I did to fix it, this time:
In .bashrc, I added the line
export PERL5LIB=/usr/lib64/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0
and Perl-Tk started working again. The only difference
from the December failure was using the underscore(_)
in place of the dash(-). I did one other thing this time, too,
and that was to get rid of the i386 version of Perl on my AMD64
machine using this command:
yum remove perl.i386
Although I don't use Perl heavily now on AMD64 machines,
I will be building several MythTV AMD64 boxes this year and
they will need perl.x86_64 installed and working.
Don't know if this will help you with your particular situation,
but your description seemed like it might. Good luck.

HELP - trying to use YUM with Fedora3
by clemens@dwf.com
Im trying to use YUM with Fedora3, (I previously used apt-get), and I must be
doing
something stupid, but I cant see it.
in /home/ftp/yum/fedora3/RPMS.os I have the RPMS from the 4 binary CDs
Press <RETURN> to continue...
in /home/ftp/yum/fedora3/RPMS.updates I have all the updates to date.
I have run yum-arch on each of them, viz
yum-arch /home/ftp/yum/fedora3/RPMS.os
yum-arch /home/ftp/yum/fedora3/RPMS.updates
my /etc/yum.conf file reads
[root@orion etc]# more /etc/yum.conf
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
# debuglevel=2
debuglevel=10
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
pkgpolicy=newest
# distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
retries=20
obsoletes=1
# gpgcheck=1
gpgcheck=0
# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d
[base]
name=Fedora3 Core base
baseurl=ftp://orion/yum/fedora3/RPMS.os
gpgcheck=0
[updates]
name=Fedora3 Core updates
baseurl=ftp://orion/yum/fedora3/RPMS.updates
gpgcheck=0
---
When I TRY to run 'yum update' to bring this initial install up
to date, I get the message:
[root@orion ~]# yum update
Repository base already added, not adding again
Yum Version: 2.1.11
COMMAND: yum update
Installroot: /
You have enabled checking of packages via GPG keys. This is a good thing.
Press <RETURN> to continue...
However, you do not have any GPG public keys installed. You need to download
the keys for packages you wish to install and install them.
You can do that by running the command:
rpm --import public.gpg.key
For more information contact your distribution or package provider.
---
Now I have several problems:
(1) why is it saying 'You have enabled checking of packages via GPG keys'
when I turned that off in [main] and in each section???
(2) The command 'rpm --import public.gpg.key' does NOT work, I get:
root@orion ~]# rpm --import public.gpg.key
error: public.gpg.key: import read failed.
(3) What is this message
'Repository base already added, not adding again'
---
any and all help appreciated,- If I cant get this thing to work, or at
least get some sensable error messages out of it, Im going to have to
go back to apt-get (sigh).

Hostname question
by Sasa Stupar
Hi!
I have a dhcp server (FC3) on local network for linux/windows machines. One
thing that bothers me is that when I check Active leases I don't have
hostname for linux machines while for windows there are. I have on all
linux machines setup hostname manually but they don't appear and therefore
since I have also DDNS with DHCP I don't get those hosts into DNS.
What am I missing in configuration here?

Sasa

[FC3] kernel-2.6.11-1.14_FC3 freezes on boot
by Slava Bizyayev
I use kernel-2.6.10-1.770_FC3 on my HP OmniBook XE2 pretty happily.
After updating kernel to kernel-2.6.11-1.14_FC3 I experience a strange
behavior -- in the end of the boot (instead of X-login screen) machine
freezes, and I cannot even get the terminal access with ctrl-alt-F1. Has
someone experienced something similar? What's the work around?
Thanks,
Slava

FC3 install fails
by Scott A. Zanke
Hello,
I can't get FC3 to install. I am currently running FC1 on this box and
have run RH7.3, 8 and 9 on it.
Athlon 1Ghz, 768MB ram, TNT2 graphics card, Linksys LNE 100TX V5 nic,
FC1 on HDB and Windows 2000 Pro on HDA using GRUB.
I tried linux ide-nodma and the media check runs fine.
Once Anaconda starts things get ugly. Tons of fast scrolling text most
of which I believe says Bad Page State then it ends with..
VFS: cannot open root device "(null)" on unknown-block(8,3)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(8,3)
I've been digging through the archives but haven't found anything that
relates.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Scott

OT: Industrial Process modeling
by Bill Gradwohl
I'm looking for an application, hopefully under Linux, to model an
industrial process. If I knew what something like this was called, I
could Google for it, but I know of no name for it.
Extremely trivial example:
Drill Press time 5 minutes - consumes D kwh of electricity. Leads to:
CNC machine time 60 minutes - consumes C kwh of electricity. Leads to:
Anealing oven time 30 minutes - Consumes A kwh of eletricity.
I'd like to feed the app resources, characteristics of those resources,
and then plug in production figures over a time period and have it tell
me how many Drill Presses, etc I need to get that production, how much
energy is consumed to add to cost of goods, etc.
Largely this is a complex scheduling problem. The app should also
highlight resource shortages to say that certain things are impossible
due to not enough whatever, and lay out a time line for when things need
to happen.
Any one know what this might be called, and where I might find such an app?
