FC3 and ATI Digital video
by Gene Czarcinski
I am having problem when I use digital (DVI) versus analog video.
The hardware:
ASUS SK8V motherboard with an Opteron 140 and 2GB ram. The video is an ATI
9100 with both digital and analog video output (radeon driver). The monitor
is a Dell 2000FP (LCD) which can handle both analog and digital (DVI) input
selectable on the monitor. The is also a Belkin Omnicube 4 port KVM.
When I first started using the ASUS/Opteron system in my setup, I found that I
could not use the analog video through the KVM ... the ASUS BIOS "overdrove"
the monitor and it cut out. However, FC1 did work OK for both install and
running using this analog configuration.
My solution to the problem was to not use the analog/KVM setup but instead to
connect the monitor to the ATI 9100 using the digital (DVI) interface and
then use the selection on the monitor to switch to DVI input when I selected
that ASUS/Opteron. This worked fine with FC1 and FC2 (both i386 and x86_64).
I skipped this round of testing so my first exposure to FC3 was the final
release. I first installed it on another system and that went fine. I then
tried installing on the ASUS/Opteron ... oops, black screen and then the
monitor went into powersave mode (turned off). After several tries, I gave
up and did a text everything install. Install and bootup ... oops, X fails
to start again. OK, reboot and come up in non-X (3). I ran
system-config-display from another system via ssh and everything looked like
it configured properly but X did not display.
After some fooling around, I switch to using the analog/KVM setup instead of
the digital (DVI) setup. That worked fine. With this setup I also then
installed the x86_64 FC3 and it worked fine too.
Bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=139023
I noticed some laptops are also having problems and wonder if that problem is
related.
Question: Is anyone using digital (DVI) video, an ATI video card and the
radeon driver? Does it work? IS anyone having problems?

Grub loading stage2 error
by jery_wang
I've just installed FC3 on hdb1 and I've got XP on hda1.
On the first reboot (and a couple that followed) the following comes up on screen and then just sits there:
GRUB Loading stage2...
I've had a look around a few forums and everyone keeps suggesting booting from the second installation disk or typing in this, that or the other. But it tries to load Grub before trying to boot from the CD drive even though I've got the CD drive infront of the HD in the boot order.
I'm an utter rookie with all this, so I have no idea what information is needed to work out what's going on. Be gentle with me...
Thank you.

2GB limit on samba and nfs?
by Mike Burger
Sorry for the cross post, but the environment calls for it.
I'm running a RHL9 server, and an FC2 client.
Whether by NFS or SMB, I'm running into the same problem.
On my FC2 client system, I'm trying to create a 3.5GB file on the RHL9 based
server. Every time I try, though, I get stuck at the 2GB mark.
At present, I'm attempting to do this via x-cd-roast, which, of course, makes
use of cdrecord(-prodvd).
I'm stuck...I've got the ProDVD key working, as I'm writing more than 1GB,
and I'm not aware of any limitations on x-cd-roast. The mounted filesystem
has 40+GB free on it, so that's not an issue, and I'm running SGI's XFS, to
which I've written files larger than 2GB, before...but directly on the
RHL9 system, as opposed to via networked filesystem.
The system is up to date, as I'm using apt-get against the fedoralegacy
servers for the RHL9 system, and am using both up2date and apt-get for the
FC2 system.
I'm at a bit of an impasse.
Is anyone aware of nfs/smbfs limits that I should be aware of?

Re: dud commands
by jery_wang
thank you very much you two...i am reading up on the http://linuxcommand.org/ tutorial site on the command line and after that i will check out your suggestion www.tldp.org thierry. if anything learning to get fedora up and running will teach me a helluva lot!!
Michael,
less /etc/resolv.conf returned a blank screen
less /etc/host.conf returned an all but blank screen with "order hosts, bind" at the bottom.
i'll be reading up on this but all help is graciously appreciated.

Suspend on Fedora
by Torben M. Hansen
Dear All
Now something on topic. Inspired by the slightly off topic discussion about
energy consumption, I have tried to find out how to use suspend to software
on Fedora. It seem however rather evolved and not perfectly reliable. Isn't
there an easier way than to patch and recompile the kernel?
I have given up compiling the official fedora kernel so I'm now using 2.6.11
from kernel.org.

HOWTO Install apache-2.0.53 mysql-4.1.10 and PHP-5.03
by jery_wang
Fedora Core 3, Apache 2.53, MySQL 4.1.10, PHP 5.03 Setup
Intro
This is an easy way to setup your 2005 uptodate server!
Aclarations:
- Don't get fooled by the "[root@fedora SRPMS]#" Thats only my prompt. You probably have a #> or simething like that.
- I will assume you have a i386 compilant arch. Sorry, i'm not a guru, I have to
stick with what I know!
Pre-Requisites:
- Login as root
- Connect to the internet (i assume you already are)
- run:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]#yum update
I don't know if you really need the above, but you'll thank me! Remember you should update udev (http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/udev/)
1.- Download:
1.1- http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/4.1.html
MySQL-shared-compat-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-shared-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-server-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm.part
MySQL-Max-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-embedded-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-devel-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-client-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
MySQL-bench-4.1.10-0.i386.rpm
save to /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/
1.2- http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/SRPMS
httpd-2.0.53-4.src.rpm
pcre-5.0-3.src.rpm
php-5.0.3-2.src.rpm
sqlite3-3.0.8-3.src.rpm
save to /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS
2- Go to /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS and run:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# rpmbuild --rebuild sqlite3*.rpm
2.1- Go to /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 and run:
[root@fedora3 i386]# rpm -Uhv sqlite3*.rpm
2.2- Return to /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS and run:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# rpmbuild --rebuild pcre*.rpm
2.3- Go to /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 and run:
[root@fedora3 i386]# rpm -Uhv pcre*.rpm
2.4- Return to /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS and run:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# rpmbuild --rebuild *.rpm
Go get something to eat, spend time with your family or make some
excercise 'cause this is gonna take some time.
2.5- Go to /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386 and move the installed rpm's with:
[root@fedora3 i386]# mkdir installed
[root@fedora3 i386]# mv pcre*.rpm installed
[root@fedora3 i386]# mv sqlite3*.rpm installed
2.6- Install everything else with:
[root@fedora3 i386]# rpm -Uhv *.rpm
3.- If everything went fine, you should have a bunch of RPM's in your
/usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/ folder (If you have the same arch as me).
If you happen to have a diferent architecture, use a bit o logic.
Try looking for them in the apropiate dir located in /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/.
Here is the list:
httpd-2.0.53-4.i386.rpm httpd-debuginfo-2.0.53-4.i386.rpm

sqlite3-3.0.8-3.i386.rpm sqlite3-debuginfo-3.0.8-3.i386.rpm
sqlite3-devel-3.0.8-3.i386.rpm
4.- Move everything to the "installed" folder you created in step 2.5 with
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# mv *.rpm installed
5.- I know you're dying to try it! Wait a sec! We haven't compiled the extension yet!
(MySQLi of course!)
6.- Go to /usr/src/redhat/SRPMS and install the PHP5 source code with:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# rpm -i php*.rpm
6.1- Go to /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES and copy the file php-5.0.3-2.tar.gz to the
directory BUILD with:
[root@fedora3 SOURCES]# cp php-5.0.3-2.tar.gz /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/
And go there.
6.2- UnGzip with
[root@fedora3 BUILD]# gzip -d php-5.0.3-2.tar.gz
6.3- UnTar with
[root@fedora3 BUILD]# tar -xvf php-5.0.3-2.tar
6.4- Go to /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/PHP5.0.3-2/ext/mysqli and run:
[root@fedora3 mysqli]# phpize
[root@fedora3 mysqli]# ./configure --enable-embedded-mysqli \
--enable-static \
--with-mysqli=/usr/bin/mysl_config \
--with-php-config=/usr/bin/php-config
Note:
Each time you type a "\" press enter once, it wont start, it will give you a new line so
your command doesn't look like this:
./configure --enable-embedded-mysqli --enable-static --with-mysqli=/usr/bin/mysl_config
--with-php-config=/usr/bin/php-config
6.5- Keep your fingers crossed and pray, concentrante, think positive, sing... do something
so the command works!
6.6- If no error message apears just run:
[root@fedora3 mysqli]# make install
6.7- Now go to /etc/php.d and make a copy of the mysql.ini file so we can use it as the
mysqli.ini file with:
[root@fedora3 SRPMS]# cp mysql.ini mysqli.ini
6.8- Edit this file with nano mysqli.ini and make shure the file looks like this:
; Enable mysqli extension module
extension=mysqli.so
6.8.1- Save the changes with ctrl+o and exit with ctrl+x
7.0- Restart your apache daemon with:
[root@fedora3 php.d] apachectl restart
THE END
Be happy and I hope it works as well for you as for me.
Remember to create the mysql user and password (# mysqladmin -u root password "whatever") and to put an index.php in /var/www/html/ with a <?php phpinfo(); ?> to check if everything is ok.
Thats all
