RE: Browse Samba server from XP
by Irving, Dave
Ah... Its got a bit more interesting...
My server is now showing up when I explore the windows workgroup.
I've added a public share area, with this config:
[publicShare]
readOnly = No
public = Yes
browseable = Yes
writeable = Yes
path = /home/public
I can log in no problem if I supply my samba user name / password.
The problem Im having is that if someone unknown to samba tries to access
the share from an XP box, they are challenged for a username / password.
I've set my "guest account" to "nobody" - and there is an entry for nobody
in /etc/passwd - but other than that I've made no alterations.
Is there something else I need to set-up to allow anonymous access?
Thanks,
Dave

I might be wrong, but is this what you are looking for?
From man smb.conf
announce as (G)
This specifies what type of server nmbd(8) will announce itself as,
to a network neighborhood browse list. By default this is set to
Windows NT. The valid options are : "NT Server" (which can also be
written as "NT"), "NT Workstation", "Win95" or "WfW" meaning
Windows NT Server, Windows NT Workstation, Windows 95 and Windows
for Workgroups respectively. Do not change this parameter unless you
have a specific need to stop Samba appearing as an NT server as
this may prevent Samba servers from participating as browser servers
correctly.
Default: announce as = NT Server
Example: announce as = Win95
also, for your shares (e.g. [home]) add
browseable = yes

Browse Samba server from XP
by Irving, Dave
Hi,
I've set up a Samba server on my new Fedora 3 install.
I can connect to it directly from an XP box with no problems, but it does
not show when I browse the network from an XP box.
I've been looking thru the docs provided with the install and on the net,
but cant find anything that's immediately obvious. Ive done a nbtstat on my
XP box and used the workgroup name I found here as my Samba workgroup.
If someone could point me in the right direction it'd be greatly
appreciated...
Thanks,
Dave

at-3.1.8-64_FC3 problems
by Georg Wittig
Hello list,
the 'at' command doesn't work any longer for me since I installed the
at-3.1.8-64_FC3 rpm. The command apparently does nothing, and in
/var/log/cron the following error message appears
atd[8143]: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.
Looks like a PAM problem to me. I cannot find any hint in the
changelogs. /etc/at.allow doesn't exist, and /etc/at.deny hasn't been
touched (empty file). I really don't see why 'at' suddenly should stop
working.
Does anyone know if this is a newly introduced bug or how to solve or
work-around that problem?

RE : Problem with gam_server
by mathieu.millet@ratp.fr
I have sometimes (well many times since I have upgraded something but I
don't remember what) the same problem with USB HD and USB Key.
For the story, gamin (gam_server) is like fam (File Alteration Monitor) but
designed for just one user.
In order to be able to unmount cleanly, I have to 'kill -HUP nautilus' and
then 'kill gam_server', because kiling just gam_server isn't enough since it
is respawned immediately with the "same locks" on the file it monitors.
You may find additional help with this bug case :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=142637
I hope it helps you.
Sincerely yours, Mathieu.

Accesing sound card on remote machine
by Radek Vokál
This is not a big issue, more a fun for me. I have another machine
standing next to me with soundcard and speakers and I would like to
control it remotly but ssh-ing on the machine and running mpg321 doesn't
give me any sound. Does anyone know the solution for this? What should I
allow on the remote machine to hear my music?
