How to: *.tar.gz -> *.rpm ?
by Strong
Is there an algorithm how to make an rpm out of existing source files?
Say, I can compile the program out of *.tar.gz, but when I would remove
it - it would be hard to say what to remove as it will be out data
base. So, is there an easy way to make an rpm out of the tar.gz?! -
Thank You!

Thanks for your input!
I was starting to wonder if it was worth keeping FC4 due to several
problems but I think I will keep it for now and wait for FC5 to become
stable, thanks to you! I think I will try to solve the current problems
with FC4 namely the Eclipse/Tomcat issue that I have been fighting for
weeks now and it appears that the Fedora-Java mailing list has been inactive
for several days... must be the holidays.
Again, thanks for your input!
Kind regards,
Dan

MPlayer Dependancy problem
by Ali Helmy
Hey,
I downloaded the RPM for the MPlayer (movie player) but when I try to
install it, I get the following error:
[root@localhost RPMs]# rpm -Uvh mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm
warning: mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386.rpm: Header V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key
ID 16a61572
error: Failed dependencies:
libmp3lame.so.0 is needed by mplayer-1.0pre7try2-2.i386
So, I tried to yum install that lib, but yum says no matches
[root@localhost RPMs]# yum install libmp3lame.so.0

Suggestions?
PS: does any one know of any other good quality movie players for FC, that
can play .mov, .wmv, .mpg & .avi files?

Accumulating swap over time
by Douglas Phillipson
Running FC4 kernel 2.6.14-1.1653_FC4smp. I seem to accumulate a large
amount of swap over time. (A few days. I'm not running any unusual
apps. My memory stastics (xosview) says I have gobs of free memory but
after a while, even with a gig or more of free RAM my swap goes up to
several hundred megabytes and things slow way down. The disk swaps
madly and then backs off for a while. It seems to be cyclic in nature
but the swap never goes away until a reboot. At all times I have in
excess of a gig of free RAM. The only apps I'm running are Firefox,
Thunderbird, openoffice 2.0, perhaps a music player on this machine
under KDE 3.5.0.
Thanks

pax/ustar not properly handling long pathnames
by Matt Morgan
man pax says that ustar format handles filenames up to 99 characters
and pathnames (filename + directory names + slashes) up to 250
characters. So why am I getting this message back from pax when I try
to create a ustar-formatted archive?
pax: File name too long for ustar
/home/matt/.openoffice.org2.0/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/UI/StartModuleWindowState.xcu
It's 100 characters total, which would be too long for old-fashioned
tar. But ustar should be fine with it. This is FC4, fyi.
Thanks,
Matt

FC4 Users?
by Dan Thurman
Hi Folks,
Is FC4 a fully working and stable release? Should I be upgrading
to FC5 (is it rawhide?) because it is more stable or better or has
neato features or what?
Since FC5 does not yet have a "stable release", should I wait?
Kind regards,
Dan

Max usable disk space
by Jason Ragsdale
All,
I am looking to build a NSF server starting with:
4 x 300GB drives RAID5, and adding 4 more 500GB RAID5 drives later. Is
there a max filesystem size limit with fedora core 4? Or are there any
other options that may cause me issues later down the road? Thanks in
advance.

Konquerer Error
by Pete
Fedora Core 3
KDE Desktop
CrossOver Office (Wine)
-Microsoft Office
Greetings --
Issue:
I wanted to change file associations of any MS Word documents (*.doc) from OpenOffice.org to MS Word.
What I did:
In the Control Center under KDE Components I went to File Associations.
I then changed the associations and icon for MS Word to be associated
with the MS Word application which I have running under CrossOver Office
(Wine).
I have made no attempt to revert back to the original file associations, as I am not sure what they were. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of not writing down the original configuration to go back to where it was working without any errors.
Result:
After changing the file associations I ran Konquerer and got this error (the link goes to a screenshot I made of the error message)
http://www.websolutionpro.com/konqerror.png
When I click on OK Konquerer will open without any apparent problems or other difficulties. No other system issues apparent.
What I am asking:
Since there does not appear to be any serious system issues, this falls under the annoyance category and I would mainly like to just get rid of the error.
Any assistance with restoring the original file associations would be appreciated. This should be what Fedora configures right from the installation.
Any explanation of what this error means or if I should be aware of something else which I have not considered would be appreciated.
I am not currently working on the system with the error. I anticipate I will be at that system aproximately 5:00 pm Mountain Standard Time today.
Thank you
Pete
