nautilus & sound in FC2
by M.Hockings
I have scrounged around a bit in the archives but don't see any hits on
this but I am sure there must be a solution. I have moved two machines
to FC2, one (an IBM PC300PL) was an upgrade from FC1 and the other (an
old Aptiva) I formatted the disk and did a clean install. I have
similar problems on both in that the file explorer tool (is that
Nautilus?) is acting like an old Window 95 tool such that it lacks the
tree on the left of the window and opens a new window with each
directory you open. I don't see any setting in it to change this and
make the operation like it was in FC1. What am I overlooking?
My second questions is why does sound no longer seem to work. On both
machines now (where sound was working in FC1 with no help just fine) the
soundcard detection tool reports none found.
Any thoughts on either of these anomalies? If I didn't know better I
would have thought that FC2 was previous version of FC1...

Enlightenment

Hi
Is anybody using Enlightenment with Fedora Core 2?
I'd like to know how one gets it to start clean without the
old desktop?
Cheers

FC2, postfix, cyrus-imapd virtual domain doc
by James Bourne
re all,
I've put up a short doc on setting up virtual domains using postfix and
cyrus-imapd under FC2 at
http://www.lnxsys.ca/docs/postfix-cyrus-FC2/
I wrote this as I couldn't find any single source that noted the setup of
completely virtual domains. You will need to know a few things about setup
under FC2 already, but it contains fixes for a couple of gotchas that slowed
down the setup process.
Anyone is welcome to email me comments and corrections on this and of course
use it for setting up your own stuff.
Regards
James

mount issue on FC2.B (no CD, DVD, usb camera)
by Jean-Patrick Pommier
Dear all,
I installed a fedora FC2.B from DVD. After installation, it is
impossible to mount an amovible device (CD, DVD, usb camera).
When I try to mount a DVD (from KDE or gnome), I get ... n'est pas un
périphérique valide de type bloc (not a valid block device...)
After some googling I tried:
"dmesg | grep hd" which gave
Kernel command line : no root=LABEL /hdc=ide-scsi rhgb
hdc slimtype COMBO LSC-24082, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
So I tried "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom", result:
/dev/hdc n'est pas un périphérique valide de type bloc
In fstab, there is
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom cdf, iso 9660 noauto, owner, kudzu, ro 00
kudzu detects (from /etc/sysconfig/hwconf):
CDROM desc slimtype COMBO LSC-24082K
bus SCSI
device scd0
driver ignore
host 0
channel 0
lun 0
generic sg0
So I tried "mount /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom"
result ... "/dev/scd0 n'est pas un périphérique valide de type bloc"
Let see the modules : "/sbin/lsmod" gave (at least):
scsi-mod
uhci-hcd
I also tried "eject /dev/sr0",It doesn't eject anything
I have also been told to try "cd /dev" and "./MAKEDEV". I get a message
regarding the correct way to use MAKEDEV ...
The config:
laptop PCTeck
dual boot XP/fedora FC2.B (kernel 2.6.6)
chipset VIA, CPU nehemia 1GHz, GPU VIA CLE266
DVD/CDRW slimtype COMBO LSC-24082K
Any advice?
*A simple way to fix the stuff
*Reinstalling FC1 + upgrading everything but Kernel 2.4?
*Back to FC1? (It works)
*Waiting FC3?
Thank you
PS
No sound too.

SCSI installations
by Stuart Lamble
Hello FC Users
Can anyone tell me the correct procedure to installing FC2 on SCSI disks?
When I try run the install off cd, the machine just hangs.
Do I need to parse any special boot: parameters to tell FC about SCSI?
Thanks
Stuart

NFS mounting... bypass portmap
by Dan Vietor
I am trying to mount a NFS partition across a router that has port 111
(TCP) blocked. In Fedora 1 and other RedHat releases, I could use the
mountport=### in the mount options to bypass portmap and mount the
partition. In Fedora 2, this option seems to be disabled.
When I use ethereal to check what's going on, I see a TCP request to
sunrpc (port 111 or portmap) and a return from the router "ICMP no route
to host" and then the mount fails. It actually backgrounds the mount
process and hangs there.
Is there any way with the FC2 mount command to bypass the portmapper and
specify the port that mountd is running on so I can mount the partition?

Text Editor
by Thomas E Dukes
Hello,
I was wondering if there is a text editor equivalent to TextPad for
Windows.
What I'm looking for is the ability to search for a word or phrase in a
directory of files.

Fedora Core 2 on Compaq (HP) Proliant DL360 G2
by Joel Moxey
Hi!
I am having much difficulty installing FC2 on a Compaq Proliant DL360 G2.
First of all I tried using the GUI install this just froze before completing installing the RPMs, I tried doing on install using text, and the install stopped at about the same place - however, this time the screen was covered in a load of characters!
After I tried all combinations of using ide=nodma and noacpi, and when using both together, the install managed to get through to the post-RPM bit where configuration is done - I then just had an egg timer for a long long time.... so it seems to have hung later in the process.
I'm not really sure what to try next!
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Joel

Latest versions of cdrecord, xcdroast, k3b can't burn my CDs
by Fulko.Hew@sita.aero
I updated my FC2 system last night with the new versions of CD burner
software that was release yesterday... and this morning...
I can't burn CDs any more. I'm not sure I can blank CDs either.
I noticed that I had to go through the xcdroast setup procedure again.
Its progress bars don't work for me anymore, and the result
of a burn, is not mountable.
When I try k3b, it causes my CD burner to drive the head into
the end stops (not a nice sound), and I get the same bad
result. The first time, it couldn't even complete the burn,
and the second time, it completed, but again it was un-mountable.
I know one other person, who can't burn CDs anymore too,
so its not just me.
Comments??
