Hello plus question
by Steven Hodgen
I'm new to this list, so "Hello!"
I'm currently in the process of discussing the possibility of turning our
school into a Linux based school, with lab and office computers running
Linux. I'm seriously considering using Fedora, because it seems to have
pretty up to date desktop packages, looks nice, and the install has a good
selection of packages as is.
The Principal of the school has a serious eyesight problem, and must use
screen magnification software to use his computer. For windows, decent
full-screen magnification packages cost, at least, $400. he currently uses
a package called ZoomText 7.1, which originally cost him $395. How they
have an update that's another $150. Shortly another update that costs even
more is coming out. On one level, I can see how a company who's only
product is a screen magnifier would need to charge a bit to stay in
business, since it's a vertical market, but still...
I opened the Assistive Technology Support preferences box, enabled support,
but the Magnifier and Screen Reader choices are grayed out. I did a little
digging, and it seems that gnopernicus must be installed. Based on further
research, it would seem that this package is part of the 'core 2' system,
but it doesn't appear to be available in the Add/Remove Programs (Package
Manager?) tool. I've checked the details for every category, and nothing.
Can anyone help me find this, since having decent screen magnification will
definitely influence his opinion.
Thanks!!

IBM x306 + SATA Raid
by Scott McClintock
Hi,
I would like to get FC2 running on an IBM x306 with the onboard SATA
(Adaptec) RAID controller. I have it working under SUSE9.0 and there
are drivers for RHEL3 but I can't get anything happening with Fedora.
Has anyone tried this or have any ideas?
regards
Scott

enabling ip6tables in FC1
by Audsin Dev
Hi Fedora Users
I am using FC1 with custom built 2.4.26 kernel. I enabled all the IPv6
netfilter modules (like the userspace queuing via netlink, IP6 tables
support etc) when i recomplied my kernel. I have the following modules in my
/lib/modules/2.4.26/kernel/net/ipv6/netfiler
ip6_queue.o, ip6table_filter.o, ip6table_mangle.o, ip6_tables.o, ip6t_ah.o,
ip6t_dst.o, ip6t_esp.o, ip6t_eui64.o, ip6t_frag.o, ip6t_hbh.o, ip6t_hl.o,
ip6t_ipv6header.o,ip6t_length.o, ip6t_LOG.o, ip6t_mac, ip6t_mark.o,
ip6t_MARK.o, ip6t_multiport.o, ip6t_owner.o and ip6t_rt.o
However i dont find ip6tables in my system. I have iptables in my /sbin but
NOT ip6tables. when i type "service ip6tables start" i get ip6tables:
unregonized service.
Any suggestions for enabling ip6tables in FC1
Regards
Dev

UW Imap FC! to Cryus-imapd FCD broken E-mail
by test
When I upgraded from FC1 to FC2 it installed cyrus-imap..which broke my
pop3/imap clients.
I spent a day off and on trying to get it working. How do I get my pop3
working again?
FC2 sendmail squirrellmail . No LDAP ..saslauthd and cyrus-imapd are
started and running.
Sendmail is receiving ok..I just can't get authorized from clients (
thunderbird , OE .Outloook)
I tried using pam ..NG...
It's currently using shadow by default.
I read the docs but can't get things working...,
Is there something I'm overlooking?

Is uw-imap still installed? If so is the daemon running? Use the chkconfig
command to find out...

Sendmail must be configured to use cyrus-imapd instead of uw-imapd. I've done it
before; however I ended up moving from both Sendmail and uw-imapd in favor of
Postfix and cyrus-imapd. I did it from a cold start because I got tired of
trying to remember how I had got it to work in the first place... To be honest,
using postfix is much easier to configure than sendmail... I installed the
postfix, read the configuration requirements (which does not require a great
deal of time like Sendmail does. I have a huge O'Reilly book for configuring
Sendmail...).
I also moved from Squirrelmail to OpenGroupware (http://www.opengroupware.org
and http://www.exchangekiller.com ). The cyrus-imapd saves the file in a
database versus appending each mail to each other. It only took me about 2 hours
to complete the transition. If you decide to use cyrus, you'll have to install
the devel tools to convert your old mail. The most difficult was this task and
it was only because I had not done this before.
Now with that said, I would first see if your rpm is installed. Did they change
the name of the imapd rpm that comes with fedora? I was under the impression
that it was not too cyrus, only that it was available. If cyrus is installed I
would check to see what imapd is running using the chkconfig command...
Sendmail can definitely be a pain but the default config doesn't require much
changes. I ran into problems when I had to move off the uw-imapd to cyrus
(better functionality for the OpenGroupware). I had it running but I did
something and never got it to work right (that's what happens when you work when
you should be sleeping!).

did you modify your sendmail.mc (and compile using the m4 macro to use cyrus)?

error in XKB configuration..I have tried everything
by Vishal Modak
hi everybody
i am getting XKB configuration error when I login fedora core 2 as non-root..
I know..several ppl have had this problem..there are various fixes suggested over the web..for the past 1 week..i have been almost the solutions presented in the various mailing lists and unfortunately..
all have failed to solve my problem
these are fixes that i have tried
1. Added a Option "XkbRules" "xrg" in xorg.conf
2. Adding symbolic links to xfree86.lst -> xorg.lst
xfree86-it.lst -> xorg-it.lst
xfree86.xml -> xorg.xml
3. I have also tried Xorg -configure and created a new xorg file..
None of the above solutions have worked for me..
I am left with no other option..please help me out...
I have reached to point where..I think reinstalling FC2 is my only option..but i really dont want to do it..
Is there any other alternative..?

Fedora might be good for the desktop; however you might want to consider
something like White Box Enterprise Linux (Open Source version of Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 3.0) as a server based solution.

You might have to look browse on the CD for the rpm that you're looking for:
ls |grep -i gnopernicus
Once you find it just install it via the rpm command:
rpm -Uvh <the_name_goes_here>

Gerry,
You're not alone. I've seen the above errors since using the samba-3.x
series rpm's. Fortunately, everything is working fine at this end too (as
you also stated). In fact, google shows this error is not just limited to
samba, so I'm at a loss as to why this is happening. I've even tried running
ethereal on both my XP and Samba boxes at the same time trying to capture
what the hell is causing this - but so far, have not been able to recreate
this error during the capture process. :-(
Maybe someday I'll get lucky and be able to capture what is causing this
problem with ethereal. It is annoying.

Change boot Kernel
by Steven Hodgen
Oh yes, one more thing.
Shortly after installing Fedora, the automatic update system let me upgrade
the Kernel from 2.5.* to 2.6.*. Now, when I boot, it gives me a choice on
which to boot with, but it always defaults to the old one. How can I change
which Kernel is default.
Additionally, can I simply remove the older one?
I'm certain these are extremely basic questions, but I'm a poor slovenly
newbie.
Thanks! :-)
