Core 2: Accidently switched on SELINUX
by Jan Houtsma
Hello,
By accident i installed the policy rpm on an updated machine (from core
1 to core 2). The update did not install the core utils for selinux and
stuff, so i only had policy (shouldn't the dependencies have picked this
up somehow?).
Then i rebooted the box. Below is the result.... The box sometimes even
hanged. I fixed it by doing rpm -e policy again.....
My question is if there isn't done any harm to my system anyhow because
the log shows it tried to change all kind of stuff to my system......
Also after a reboot /selinux is always mounted again. On a fresh box it
doesn't. How can i get rid of that? Before the policy rpm /selinux was
always unmounted by default.
Thanks,

FC2 & Nvidia
by Peter L. Hurd
Hey Jim,
Jim Radford
> I have an Nvidia card and am wishing to do a complete wipe and
> reinstall (from FC1 to FC2). What issues are there with the Nvidia
> drivers and how do I overcome them?
I upgraded 3 Nvidia equipped boxes from FC1 to FC2 and had no problem.
I just followed the usual kernel upgrading procedure.
But now, I've spent all day to day trying to get the Nvidia drivers to
run (they'll load - at least there are no errors or warnings in
Xorg.0.log - but I get an unresponsive grey screen) on a machine I
upgraded from RH9 to FC2. I'm about ready to pitch the damn thing out
the window...
I'm hoping that atrpms.net makes some FC2 Nvidia RPMS. I've never tried
them, but that's what I'll wait for.
In case anyone sees an obvious clue I'm missing here's the Xorg.0.log
file and the XF86Config file...

SLIP peer-to-peer in FC2
by Gabriel M. Beddingfield
I'm trying to connect two computers using SLIP. I'm running FC2 as the host.
(The client happens to be on BusyBox).
Here's what's happeneing in FC2:
$ su
Password:
# slattach -p slip -s 115200 /dev/ttyS0 &
[1] 3884
# bash: slattach: command not found
[1]+ Exit 127 slattach -p slip -s 115200 /dev/ttyS0
#
Searching the web, it looks like slip isn't loaded and I need to do a kernel
compile. YIKES! Anybody know a simpler way... I'm a bit of a newbie. I looked
to try to find slip.ko so I could do an insmod -- but all I found was slip.h.
Anybody know an easy way to do this?
Peace,
Gabriel

Oracle 8.1.7 on Fedora Core 2 aka tettnang
by Ken Rice
Is it possible to install this release of Oracle on FC2? (9i or later isn't possible)
This is not for a Production Server, but for some quick testing.
I realize there is an issue with glibc:
Patch Description
-----------------
Oracle8i for Linux is shipped with archived objects which were compiled using
glibc-2.1.3. The executable components are then linked at install-time using
these archives. Due to compatibility limitations in glibc, if the target
system for an installation is based on a later version of glibc, then the
executables produced by the linker will not be valid. As a workaround to
this limitation, we have created a set of stub libraries which are used at
link-time only to mimic the contents of glibc-2.1.3 shared objects. Note
that these stub libraries do not contain valid executable code, and therefore
*must NOT* be included in the library path searched by the dynamic loader
(i.e., do not include $ORACLE_HOME/lib/stubs in LD_LIBRARY_PATH
Should I instead go back to say RedHat 9?
I can not obtain RHES or it's siblings for this test.
Thank you!
Ken Rice

only critical packages in minimal installation
by Max Beerli
I installed Fedora Core 2 and picked the Custom installation to pick the
least amount of packages. Upon issuing the "rpm -qa | less" command I see a
bunch of packages which I'm not sure I need or not like "finger, ftp,
procmail, rdate, rdist, rsh, talk, telnet" just to name a few. Has anyone
here figured out which are the critical packages and which can be removed
without causing any issues, ie. some fedora scripts might need them for some
reason?

NVidia official driver on Fedora 2
by Thiago Vinhas de Moraes
Hi guys,
Some time ago I asked the same question, but forgot the answer. What
changes I have to make to the system, so I can properly run the official
NVidia drivers on Fedora2?
Thanks,
Thiago

Problem booting into that other OS using grub
by Nicolas Mailhot
Hi,
Some time ago (around march) I had a hardware problem (basically me not
being careful enough during component replacement) that corrupted data
on all my hard drives.
As a result I reinstalled from scratch my linux system. Today I decided
to reinstall the other OS that lives on an old 12 GiB disk (comes handy
every few months to check a oo.o pdf can be read by acrobat reader). To
simplify things I went in the bios, put the drive in lba mode, told the
bios to boot from it, scratched all existing partitions and let the OS
create a new partition spanning all the drive. So far so good.
After loosing massive amounts of time getting everything to a current
patchlevel I told the bios to resume booting on the "SCSI" card (the
additional ide card on which the linux raid is). It booted in grub all
right, and I selected other OS in the menu (I had restored my pre-crash
grub.conf by then). Black screen, no activity.
The grub entry is a simple :
title Other
map (hd2) (hd0)
rootnoverify (hd2,0)
chainloader +1
(and I think the map part is largely irrelevant since the latest version
of the other OS enumerates disks like linux and grub now)
I've tried to change the grub entry a little without getting anything
but a hang (sometimes the grub commands stays displayed,
sometimes the screen is blank). I've tried with FC1 and FC2 versions of
grub. I'm stuck.
So I'm suspecting there is a partitionning problem now.
Fdisk says :
The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 1650.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
(e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)
Disk /dev/hde: 13.5 GB, 13578485760 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1650 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hde1 * 1 1649 13245561 7 HPFS/NTFS
Parted says :
Using /dev/hde
Warning: Unable to align partition properly. This probably means that
another
partitioning tool generated an incorrect partition table, because it
didn't havethe correct BIOS geometry. It is safe to ignore, but ignoring
may cause
(fixable) problems with some boot loaders.
Ignore/Cancel? i
(parted) p
Disk geometry for /dev/hde: 0.000-12949.453 megabytes
Disk label type: msdos
Minor Start End Type Filesystem Flags
1 0.031 12935.148 primary ntfs boot
What I'm interested is the fixable part of the parted message. Both the
Linux and the other OS installations are sane, changing the boot order
in the bios always work. It's not too practical however (going into the
bios for this is a great way to nuke a system by fooling with other
options). So I'd like to get grub working as it used to.
Am I doing an obvious mistake ?
Is this a grub bug ? Should it be bugzillaed ?

Configuring ACPI to do useful things?
by Brian Kendig
I'm using FC2 on my laptop, and ACPI appears to be working, but the
default installation doesn't configure it to do anything interesting.
/etc/acpi/events only contains a script to shut it down when I press
the power button, and that works fine, but I want it to turn off the
screen if it's idle for a period of time, or suspend the laptop if it's
idle for a longer period or if the lid is closed.
Is there any simple way to install more ACPI functionality? An rpm
that will add more /etc/acpi scripts, for example? Or is there any way
to configure power management behavior through the Gnome front-end?
Also, how can I get a battery level indicator to appear in the panel?
