Gno fonts in GNOME (not pango problem)
by Mark J. Reed
For some reason I have no fonts in GNOME. It's not the pango problem;
my pango.modules is fully populated and world readable, as are all the
directories it references. But when I do a cleanup and start gnome from
scratch, all text disappears as soon as it gets to the globe+arrow logo.
I assume from this that it's a locale problem, but I have no idea where
to go from there. I also get empty .gnome2/share/?(cursor-)fonts/fonts.dir
files - or actually, containing just the single character '0'. Dunno
if that's related or if it just means I don't have my own custom fonts.
Any help?

Nautilus and .dat file type
by Norman Gaywood
This is probably an upstream problem/feature, but anyway here goes.
Nautilus thinks that files that have an extension of .dat are mpeg
videos. That has got to be wrong.
Surely, nautilus should do more that use a file extension to determine
file type?
Is there a way I can change this behaviour for all users of the system?
I came across this problem during a class on the R statistical package.
They were all using gnome login sessions and no one could edit their
data files from nautilus because it thought they were MPEG videos!

yummir, manage mirror servers in /etc/yum.conf
by Sean Reifschneider
I've been working on a program to manage the lists of repositories, and
the associated mirror servers in /etc/yum.conf. I call it yummir. It
polls a server for information on repositories and their mirrors, and
then uses that information to place into /etc/yum.conf.
For example, to update yum.conf with the latest set of mirrors:
yummir update
Or, to add the macromedia flash repository do:
yummir add macromedia
Currently, I'm only publishing repository information for Fedora. I'm
managing the list manually, and will shortly be working on tools that
automatically find out if a mirror is up to date and publishes new lists
based on that. Only a Fedora ix86 repository list is available, but it
should be easy to publish more information.
Please check it out and let me know what you think.
It's available at:
http://www.tummy.com/Software/yummir/
ftp://ftp.tummy.com/pub/tummy/yummir/
Thanks,
Sean

bug or problem with gcc and include files
by David Jansen
I have to install a program here at work that compiles fine on SuSe and
on RedHat 9, but not on FC1.
After experimenting with the routines and eliminating everything that is
not necessary to reproduce the bug, this is what it boils down to:
$ cat test1.c
void test1()
{
#include <sys/file.h>
return(0);
}
$ gcc -o test1.o -c test1.c
In file included from /usr/include/sys/types.h:219,
from /usr/include/bits/fcntl.h:25,
from /usr/include/fcntl.h:33,
from /usr/include/sys/file.h:25,
from test1.c:3:
/usr/include/sys/sysmacros.h: In function `test1':
/usr/include/sys/sysmacros.h:43: error: nested function `gnu_dev_major' declared `extern'
/usr/include/sys/sysmacros.h:49: error: nested function `gnu_dev_minor' declared `extern'
/usr/include/sys/sysmacros.h:55: error: nested function `gnu_dev_makedev' declared `extern'
Now that's easy to fix; if I move the #include out of the function to
the top of the source file, it compiles woithout any problems. Only the
package author didn't accept this "patch", stating that the program is
correct and the bug is in the fedora includes or gcc version.
What is your collective wisdom on this subject?

Grub problem
by Denham Eva
Hello,
New to fedora and have installed it, grub was default (I don't remember being able to choose lilo), It asked to create a boot disk, which I did. When the installation completed the harddisk comes up with a grub prompt at which I can't do much(or should I say, I don't know what to do). It however does boot from Floppy drive.
Now I usually use lilo with all my Redhat servers, so I don't know grub at all.
After reading the man page I soon realized I had no clue.
I am also too afraid to try and "play" with it as I might loose my WinXP partition.
So can anyone help me out with the synatx of the grub.conf file?
My machines configuration is as follows
/dev/hda1 WinXP partition.
/dev/hda2 /
How do I write grub to MBR so that it will run at bootup?
Many Thanks, any help will be appreciated.

Search for a good desktop(NOT desktop environment)
by Kaustubh Ghosh
Does anyone know of a good desktop (NOT desktop environment) for Linux? I have
kicked out both gnome and kde recently as they couldn't give me speed, and
I am using blackbox now which is perfectly fine and superbly fast. but i need
a desktop for putting some icons and shortcuts if possible. I am using ROX
Filer as file manager. It is supposed to be able to function as a desktop
(pinboard, in their lingo), but doesn't work with me. The desktop better be
as minimal as possible.
Thanks in advance.

Promise or Highpoint IDE card?
by Jean-Eric Cuendet
Hi,
Does anybody know if the IDE Cards from Promise and/or Highpoint work in
Fedora core-1?
I'm specially interested in Promise FastTrack 133 or HighPoint 372.
I don't want to use the RAID functions, just the IDE part.
I can't find good infos...
Thanks
