FC3: Garbage on text consoles
by Frank
I'm running FC3 and have all the latest updates installed. System boots
nicely into X and everything works except that if I change to one of the
text consoles (alt-F1) the screen is filled with gibberish with
different attributes (colours, blinking, reverse, etc.). The display is
identical on all consoles.
This worked fine a few days ago. Since then I have installed FC3
updates, and attempted to install a Matrox video driver. It told me
that my kernel is unsupported, so I am still running the generic VESA
driver. Not sure that any of that should matter on a text console...
What could cause this?
Frank.

Coldfusion MX Installer problem
by Stormblaze
Hey all,
I downloaded the trial for coldfusion mx. When I was running Redhat 8
this installed and ran just fine. With fedora I had issues. I got
errors about corruption and about the uncompress command not being
found. I took care of the latter by creating a soft link to gunzip.
Not sure if that is a perfect solution.
But now I get this:

Try `tail --help' for more information.

Any help solving this would be most appreciative.

NTP won't update
by Nathaniel Hall
Hi all,
I am trying to get ntp running on a couple of Fedora Core 3 machines.
It seems that ntpd is running, however when I stop the ntpd service and
try to run ntpdate, it does nothing.
I have configured ntp on multiple Fedora Core 3 systems, but cannot get
it to run correctly on two of them. NTP was installed when the system
was installed and I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the rpm with
the same result.
Has anybody had the same problem or have any ideas?

FC3 issues
by calin
Hello,
I have an issue on FC3, as following:
after few hours the system become extremely slow in responding and
eventually will hang. The time interval for this to happen is usually
4-5 hours. I tried on several configuration, all Intel based, on i865
and i875 chipsets, with video and audio incorporated, on both PATA and
SATA. I also installed FC3 with and without SELinux, as well as fresh
install or upgrading from FC2.
Does anyone have any ideea how to work this out?
Thank you
Calin Cosma

Mail server upgrade
by Paul Michael Reilly
It is time for me to migrate my mail system to FC3. It is a RH9 system
running sendmail/procmail and UW-imapd. I don't see any compelling
reason to change sendmail/procmail but the lack of support for uw-imapd
is pretty compelling to switch the IMAP server. The tenor of the mail
archives seems to point to dovecot as the IMAP server of choice for
someone like myself who is running a small shop and wants to have a
secure, simple and supported (out of the box, so to speak) solution.
The cyrus solution comes in a very close second.
The dovecot wiki has good support documentation for the migration but
before I jump in I'd like to get some opinions from people on this list
on what to watch out for, etc. that will make the migration as smooth as
possible.
As near as I can tell, it looks like all I need to do is save the
current sendmail configuration, the current /var/spool/mail/* files,
install FC3 fresh, restore the sendmail config and /var/spool/mail/*
files, enable and configure dovecot per the wiki migration notes and
then reconnect the system to the net. And it will work like a charm. :-)
I use TDMA for spam control now but would love to hear opinions on why I
should either keep TDMA or switch to spamassasin from those who have
faced that decision.
Thanks,
-pmr

3C509B and Upgrade to FC3
by Gordon Keehn
I just upgraded a running FC2 system to FC3, and everything seemed
to go smoothly except that I lost network connectivity via a slightly
aged but still functional 3C509B NIC. I've tried reactivating it via
the Network config program, but while its existence is acknowledged, it
doesn't respond to my requests to start interfacing. Since the only
access to the world beyond my home office is via that network card, it
reduces the value of that system substantially.
Has anyone else run into (and gone beyond) this problem?
Cheers,
Gordon Keehn

overheated laptop
by sly
i have 2 laptops: a dell inspiron 8000 (p3) and a dell inspiron 5100
(p4). the p3 has fc2 and runs perfect! on the other side the p4 had fc2
and had overheating problems. now i installed fc3 and it still has
overheating problems. the fen runs continuously and the temperature is
at 68C average. sometimes it reaches the critical 80C and it shuts off.
i wasn't able to find any helpful info on the web or i just didn't know
where to look. any helpful info would be appreciated.
