what is the IIim service?
by Lewis Bloch
What is the IIim service?
I don't know if it's something that came with FC2 or that I installed
and forgot.
I see it my 'chkconfig --list' as
IIim 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:off 6:off
system-config-services tells me that it's "a major component of IIIMSF",
but I don't know what that is.
It also tells me that 'htt is stopped' on this service.

16x9 aspect ratio display
by Bill Gradwohl
Is anyone using a 19" or larger 16x9 aspect ratio LCD on FC2 (or FC3tX)
running Gnome as the GUI? If so, I'd like to know what brand/model of
LCD and video board you're using and if you like it. Any glitches during
installation or usage?
Initially, I want to use the wider screen format for writing C code via
emacs. More info per eye full.
Eventually, I'd like to add a TV card and get HDTV thru the setup since
one of my TV's just died.
Hints?

Random total lockups
by Rob Brown-Bayliss
Since I installed FC2 my machine has been randomly locking up, I suspect
it's X related as it seems to happen when I am clicking on a button
etc... But cant be 100% sure.
Has this been happening to any one else? I have updated X and changed
to the nvidia drivers, but still it is happening. so maybe not X. I
have upgraded to the 2.6.6 kernel as well, but still I get total system
lockups.

FC1 Users: Sample yum.conf for Fedora Legacy Updates
by Clint Harshaw
Hi all:
I want to share my yum.conf with other FC1 users who will be migrating to
updates from Fedora Legacy. Credit is due to all of the people working with
Fedora Legacy along with Maxwell at fedorafaq.org, from whom the majority of
this yum.conf is derived.
I've tried to comment it liberally to help other users find the best fishing
holes (i.e. mirror repos) that are suitable for their own locale.
If there are any corrections or suggestions for improvement, please let us all
know.
Hope this helps,
Clint
# This is a yum.conf for Fedora Core 1 with updates from Fedora Legacy.
# I've tried to maintain a similar outline as Maxwell Kanat-Alexander's
# yum.conf found at his excellent and informative fedorafaq.org site.
#
# Note that I've included several U.S. mirrors that are close to *me*. This
means
# that you will want to have a look at this list of mirrors to
# similarly configure mirrors that are geographically close to you.
#
# http://www.fedoralegacy.org/download/fedoralegacy-mirrors.php
#
# I've left many of the "alternate repositories" commented out, as well
# as those repositories for "unstable" or "testing" files.
#
# To import Fedora Legacy's GPG signature do this as root:
# rpm --import http://www.fedoralegacy.org/FEDORA-LEGACY-GPG-KEY
#
# If you don't want to check the signatures, then comment out those lines
# that are gpgcheck=1
#
# The Mozilla SeaMonkey repo is added for those who want to update Mozilla.

VDQ : Can my FC1's gnome-terminal be fixed?
by Beartooth
Very Dumb Question:
I have FC1 on two desktop machines, and normally leapfrog them : one got
RH8 while the other kept 7.2 till I felt safe with 8; then the latter got
RH9 while the other kept 8; and so on. (I try to stay at least one release
beyond the cutting edge.)
But I hit a snag (and have asked about it in several places, to no avail;
my apologies if this is a repeat here!): the machine that should now go
forward to FC2 has a gnome-terminal that never gets a prompt.
I have no idea what I could have done to cause that. I've tried a variety
of things, including using my new Fedora-Legacy yum.conf to do yum remove
gnome-terminal and then yum install gnome-terminal. It did both, or seemed
to. But I still get a terminal with no prompt. I have three different
profiles defined for it, and normally use it with four or five tabs; but
none of the profiles gets any prompt.
I would prefer to upgrade rather than scrub and do a clean install of FC2;
but since nothing else gets my prompt back, I doubt that would, either.

Weird problem: USB lockup with a SD card
by J.L. Coenders
Hi,
I have a new digital camera (HP R707) and it works great, except for one
really bad thing:
When I have the SD card inserted and connect it to the computer using the
dock, or the direct cable, USB locks up. When trying to view
the /proc/bus/usb/devices file the viewing program locks. When I want to
shutdown, the shutdown locks at pcmcia: unloading Kernel Card Services.
Again, without the SD card, the camera works great and works with the dock and
the direct cable. It shows up in /proc/bus/usb/devices and great recognized
as a USB storage devices. Mounting it works great.
I have tested the camera with and without the SD on a windows box and it works
fine there. So I guess the SD card and the camera are ok and there is some
problem with the usb-storage driver in FC2. Does anyone have a clue?
On two machines, one running kernel 2.6.8-1.521 and the other kernel
2.6.7-1.494.2.2.
I have searched the HP site, googled and searched the archived, but I couldn't
find any good leads.

Security....
by James Kosin
Everyone,
I've actually had to lock down most ports on my server; because, I got
tired of all the attempts at attacks.
Everyone, please use a firewall. I've noticed many attacks to the
following ports:
111 -- sunrpc ** this effects Linux machines
135 -- DCE Endpoint Resolution
137 -- netbios-ns
139 -- netbios-ssn
445 -- microsoft-ds ** these affects samba services as well.
1433 -- ms-sql-s
1434 -- ms-sql-m ** I don't know why SQL ports are being attacked.
1023 -- ???
5554 -- ???
9898 -- ??? ** this group may be related to PCAnywhere, or Worm, etc.
The most active: port 445 by far!
Just giving everyone a heads-up on the security issues.

Some thoughts about yum and repositories
by D. D. Brierton
Judging from recent discussions on this list, it seems that many are
still confused about configuring their yum.conf files, and about all the
different repositories out there. I was wondering what we, the Fedora
community, might do to make this easier. I'm not so much thinking about
documentation -- it seems to me that FedoraFAQ.org does a pretty good
job of explaining stuff to people, however it still requires that they
find it or look for it in the first place. I was wondering if there was
something that could be done to yum itself (either the client program
itself, or the format of yum repositories) to make this easier.
Just off the top of my head, these things strike me as being potentially
useful:
1. Yum repositories should have a mirrors.xml file. All the user
need do is sign up to the main repository itself, the
mirrors.xml file is downloaded, and yum tries to use the mirror
that is closest or fastest (I'm not sure *how* it should do
that, but lets think of this as an ideal scenario proposal).
2. Yum repositories should be able to announce that they are
dependent on other yum repositories: if I sign up to Livna.org I
am then automatically signed up to Fedora.us.
3. If 1. can be implemented, then I think the GPG key of the
repository should automatically be installed -- because mirrors
are determined automatically you only ever sign up to the main
repository itself and so automatically retrieving its GPG key
should be no more a security issue than manually adding it.
4. I shouldn't need to alter my yum.conf when I upgrade to a new
version of FC -- yum should determine which version of FC I am
running and automatically use the appropriate repositories (i.e.
if I subscribe to rpm.livna.org when running FC2 and then I
upgrade to FC3 yum should automatically start using livna's FC3
repository).
5. I should be able to subscribe to a repository from the command
line without manually editing yum.conf (i.e. something like "yum
subscribe rpm.livna.org").
6. There should be some way of distinguishing between a repository
that is part of Fedora Core, or Fedora Extras or Fedora
Alternatives. Subscribing to a repository from Fedora
Alternatives should warn the user of potential problems. I'm not
sure quite how this should be done, but perhaps have something
like "channels" which group repositories (and yum-arch should be
altered so that you can't create a yum repository without
declaring whether it is Core, Extras or Alternatives).
7. If 6. could be implemented, then "channels" should be able to
advise you what other repositories there were in a channel,
together with a short description of what the repository
provided. This would aid people in finding the right
repositories.
If some of these things sound familiar that is because some of them are
features of Red Carpet, my favourite software installer and manager. I
would have liked to have seen red-carpet/rug/rcd adopted by Fedora Core,
but (a) it seems hardly anyone else wanted that, and (b) it looks like
Red Carpet may no longer be a standalone product but may have been
entirely integrated into Novell ZenWorks for Unix. However, if yum got
at least some of the above features I think it would be a vast
improvement, and I suspect we would have less problems reported on this
list.
I'm really hoping some people might have other suggestions, or comments
on what I've said above.
Best, Darren
