#### Apenas para comparar, resultado real do output do comando para LANG=en_US # LANG=en_US chkconfig --list network network 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
Danilo Gimenez

Hi David,
I would like to make a suggestion regarding LC_MESSAGES for Brazilian Portuguese. I found your name and email executing "strings /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/chkconfig.mo", so I took the liberty of writing you about this utility.
As a matter of fact, I've already written to Bo Adler about the same subject, and he believes you are the right person I would be writting to. I've found Bo Adler on http://freshmeat.net/projects/chkconfig/ http://freshmeat.net/projects/chkconfig/,, and have sent him exactly the same suggestion I am sending you now. Below you can find a copy of some messages I've sent him, I hope this can be useful for you.
The point is, when I set LANG=pt_BR and then execute "chkconfig --list", the current translations for the words "on" and "off" are "ligado" and "desligado". This is correct, but it turns the output quite large for an 80 columns screen size.
My suggestion is, instead of translating "on" and "off" as "ligado" and "desligado", you may use the portuguese words "sim" and "nao". These last two words are the translations for "yes" and "no". As they both have three letters, and "off" also has three letters, the output in English and Portuguese would both be the same size, and indenting would be preserved.
Thanks in advance, Danilo Gimenez

Brazil and Portugal have very different words for computer stuff. For instance, "file" in Brazil is "arquivo" and in Portugal is "ficheiro". Because of these little but important differences, it is very easy to know if a system is using pt_BR or pt_PT. Anyway, I am sending you some information about my system, so you can be sure about my configuration:
# cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 4.3 (Final) # echo $LANG pt_BR.UTF-8 # chkconfig --version chkconfig versão 1.3.13.3 # chkconfig --list ntpd ntpd 0:desligado 1:desligado 2:desligado 3:ligado 4:desligado 5:ligado 6:desligado # #### A quick view into my 'chkconfig.mo' file: # strings /usr/share/locale/pt_BR/LC_MESSAGES/chkconfig.mo > chkconfig-pt_BR.txt ( ... stuff ... stuff ... stuff ... ) Project-Id-Version: pt_BR POT-Creation-Date: 2004-06-04 12:22-0400 PO-Revision-Date: 2004-06-15 11:43+1000 Last-Translator: David Barzilay <barzilay@redhat.com <mailto:barzilay@redhat.com>> Language-Team: Portuguese <gnome-l10n-br@listas.cipsga.org.br <mailto:gnome-l10n-br@listas.cipsga.org.br>> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Report-Msgid-Bugs-To: X-Generator: KBabel 1.0 ( ... stuff ... stuff ... stuff ... )
Also, the entire "chkconfig-pt_BR.txt" file created by the last command above is attached to this email. I would like to say I only think on this last command today, when you mentioned "chkconfig.po" file. As I said you before, I found your email at Freshmeat Projects. I just realized that maybe there are different development trees for chkconfig, and I am bothering you about issues that are specific to RedHat / CentOS distribution. Do you think I should have written to David Barzilay and/or to gnome-l10n-br@listas.cipsga.org.br?
Thanks again for your attention, Danilo Gimenez

Hi Danilo,
I was looking through the source code for chkconfig, and I see that the translation is already as you suggest in the file "pt_BR.po". The translations you are seeing ("ligado/desligado") are for plain Portuguese.
Can you check your language setting and make sure that you are using "pt_BR"?
