There's always "nomodeset" to try, too. Nouveau KMS is
one of the
objectives of F12 (isn't it?), but I don't know if it's been turned on yet.
er, i can't quite remember. he can always try it both ways - nomodeset
will turn it off if on's the current default, nouveau.modeset=1 will
turn it on if off's the current default. try both, see what happens :)
