I would guess, because suspend to disk actually works on most
laptops, unlike suspend to ram.
Because suspend to disk belongs to shutdown category. With suspend to
ram, your computer is not shutdown. And in FC5 there is suspend-to-ram
under menu "Desktop->Suspend".
True, suspend-to-ram is less reliable.
