Oh lol, however -7 and newer brakes NVIDIA :)
hmm, ok thanks Rex

sorry just a quickie, if glibc had a patch in -5 which stopped the segfault in glx apps, did that then get passed on up to -6 -7 and so on?
if so then why doesn't the latest glibc work?
and how come the an earlier nividia driver works with xorg 1.11.1-1, but the latest doesn't.
sorry I don't expect you to have all the answer's, but what do you recommend I do, I now have to wait for glibc, qt, kdelibs, and nvidia to catch up now.
or does a new glibc fix all these issues, bar the nvidia one??
sorry Martin

They're two different bugs. -5 was completely broken - it caused just about everything in the world to crash, no matter what your graphics card is - and also it introduced a change which stopped NVIDIA working.
Somewhere around -8 or so the complete breakage was fixed, but the change which prevents the NVIDIA driver working right has never been touched. It's been in every build of glibc since.
If you want a working glibc+NVIDIA, you either have to run 2.14.90-4, or use the latest build with the patch from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=737223 , which reverts the specific change in glibc that stopped NVIDIA working.

OK so to recap, I'm using an old Nvidia driver because the latest one doesn't support the Xorg 1.11.1-1 ABI I'm using an old glibc because the latest one seg faults glx apps(ie glxgears)
Nvidia 275.28 glibc-2.14.90-5 patched from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=742714)
and now I have updates..... kdelibs-4.7.1-2.fc16.1 kdelibs-common-4.7.1-2.fc16.1 kdelibs-devel-4.7.1-2.fc16.1 qt-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-config-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-devel-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-mysql-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-x11-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16 qt-x11-4.8.0-0.12.20111002.fc16
which if I install causes kdeinit4 not to work.
the latest glibc in the repos is 2.14.90-10, I asume this doesn't include the patch from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=737223, which if i install causes glx apps to segfault
so if I install the glibc -10 from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=737223 will that let me install the latest updates of kdelibs and qt and not segfault glx apps? then all I need to do is wait for nvidia to support the ABI from the latest Xorg??
sorry to be pain Martin

Ok so actually the answer to that question is yes.
so now i have glibc-2.14.90-10.x86_64 with the patch from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=737223 and I'm using nvidia 275.28 and fully yum updated to kde 4.7.2
1 last thing tho, if I use the latest Nvidia from rpmfusion, is it ok to use an ignoreABI switch, or is there an ignoreABI line I can put into my xorg.conf?
I have tried the ignoreABI before, and it says it may not behave correctly or something like that. does it or doesn't it?
is anyone else using nvidia 285.05.09 from rpmfusion? if so how?
thanks in advance Martin

Ok sorry I'm a bit slow on the uptake today, anyway long story short is I'm fully updated to kde 4.7.2 and the latest nvidia driver from rpmfusion now, working fine
thanks all
