kernel-2.6.12-1.1464_FC5 also fails to open my eth0 port.
Have reverted to 1455 of the kernel and eth0 works correctly, as it has
been in the past.
Maybe change your modprobe.conf eth0 alias from sk98lin ro sk98 and
see if that works.
