I am running on Rawhide, but the solution was the same. I downgraded
xorg-x11-server-Xorg from 1.0.99.903-1 to 1.0.99.902-1 and now I can see
my text fine in both GNOME and KDE. Thanks for the info on tracing this
problem down.

I am running xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.0-1 from development and there are
no refresh problems with a ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility U1 video
card.
Is this a problem with updates-testing packages?
