mclasen: Do you know if such a document or guideline exists on freedesktop.org or in the desktop space? I'm not seeing anything jump out at http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications.
What about GNOME Human Interface Guidelines [1], may that be somewhat what you think?
