Rawhide seems hosed today
by Jonathan Kamens
I've encountered a ton of problems today, including...
* Firefox intermittently hanging when attempting to connect to some
Web sites; wireshark shows SYN packet being sent but no ACK
received in response. This one may actually be a problem with my
network connection, so I mention it first to get it out of the
day, but the others are all pretty clearly Rawhide issues...
* Can't start X with openchrome driver. X server starts up, gets to
this point in the log, and then abruptly stops:
(II) Module openchrome: vendor="http://openchrome.org/"
compiled for 1.6.1.901, module version = 0.2.903
Module class: X.Org Video Driver
ABI class: X.Org Video Driver, version 5.0
I can't even find a coredump. VESA driver works, sort of (see below).
* In thunderbird, when I click and drag a message to file it in a
folder and drag my mouse cursor over my folder list, the folder
that gets highlighted is eight folders /above/ the one my mouse is
actually over. When I let go of the mouse button, the message
gets dropped into the highlighted folder, not the one my mouse is
over. I don't think this is a thunderbird bug because thunderbird
was last updated May 19. I think it's an X server bug, since
xorg-x11-server-Xorg and xorg-x11-server-common were updated recently.
* Beagle search icon in panel has a black background (I have
beagle-0.3.9-9.fc11.i586 from koji, since Rawhide packages of
updated beagle haven't been built, which is a different problem).
* Weather applet wouldn't start up. "The panel encountered a problem
while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_GWeatherApplet"." Then when I logged
out and logged back in again, it started fine.
* The panel icons for gnome-volume-control-applet and
system-config-printer applet are still broken.
* Whenever I start any X application, when the window is first
mapped onto the screen a small white square flashes in the upper
left corner of where the window is going, before it is resized to
the correct size and drawn properly. This is clearly not a fatal
problem, but it seems like new behavior and is quite annoying.
* Firefox has crashed on me several times tonight when I tried to
delete a draft page on my WordPress blog.
* Issues with sound remain, as others have noted.
* Gimp hangs on startup and is therefore completely unusable.
* Something continues to suck CPU and keep my load average pegged at
around 2 even when I'm not doing anything. It doesn't appear to
be a single process hogging CPU, but rather a number of processes
using CPU for no discernable reason. For example, gnome-session
is stuck at around 6% CPU utilization. What could gnome-session
possibly be doing aside from waiting for me to log out?
Numerous other serious bugs I've filed recently remain unresolved,
including, but not limited to: 505971 (shutdown, reboot gone from GNOME
panel menu); 505670 (double free in /usr/lib/sa/sadc; I provided a patch
earlier today which hopefully will be picked up soon by the maintainer);
504300 (click on inkscape - X server crashes); 489492
(beagle-thunderbird doesn't work with thunderbird 3).
Ugh!

showstoppers in rawhide
by Birger Monsen
Things are getting better again. I just wanted to post the relatively
few showstoppers I see with rawhide right now. There are lots of lesser
issues, but there are 2 relatively long-standing issues and one brand
spanking new.
- gnome-terminal failing with message "There was an error creating the
child process for this terminal" is a new one. The window starts, but
without a term. GTKterm also fails with a message about /dev/ttyS0
permissions, so I assume gnome-terminal is also suffering from the same.
- Unstable audio. All apps seem to start with their individual volume
set to 0. For apps that don't have their own volume control I have to go
into the pulseaudio control panel to turn them up. Sometimes audio just
stops working until I reboot.
- No bluetooth. My hardware worked with F11, but is so far
non-functional in rawhide. I reported a bug, and it got closed with a
promise it would be fixed in the next release. Next release is
installed, and still no bluetooth.

EPEL Bug Day July 11, 2009 0-23:59 UTC
by Michael Stahnke
EPEL bug day is fast approaching and we are looking for your help. This is a
chance to get involved with EPEL and help make the overall product a little
better.
Goal: Reduce or update bugs from EPEL.
Strategy: The vast majority of EPEL bugs have been classified loosely into
three categories.
* ActualBug -- A real bug, often times with upstream software issues, or
perhaps packaging dependencies. To triage, see if you can reproduce, ask for
more input, and in general see what can be done to fix it.
* PackageBranch -- This is a request to get something into EPEL that currently
isn't there. To triage, see if the package has been branched in CVS. Perhaps
the maintainer simply hasn't built it yet. Or, if it requires dependencies,
contact the maintainer for those dependencies, open another bug, and create the
proper relationship between them.
* UpdatePackage -- Requests to update packages can be difficult in EPEL, but
each should be evaluated. Ask for reasons why the update is required (security
is an extremely valid reason). Sometimes the old version is no longer
maintained upstream, etc. Keep in mind that updates that cause breakage should
at least be mentioned on the epel-announce mailing list.
Feel free to take a bug and help out. It's a 24 hour event, and we have about
135 bugs. If we can get 6 bugs an hour triage and updated, that would be all of
them.
Event coordination and collaboration will occur in #epel on irc.freenode.net.
(Also you don't have to wait until July 11 to start)

broken dependencies in rawhide
by Clyde E. Kunkel
I'm sure I missed a notification somewhere, but am wondering why the
rawhide report no longer shows broken dependencies?

F11 yum: "Running Transaction test" for over an hour ??
by sean darcy
Running yum upgrade on F11, yum dl's a modest amount of stuff - mesa,
firefox, etc. But now it's been running transaction test for over an hour
on two different machines! Even for really big upgrades this never has
taken more than a few minutes.
Any clues?

New BugZapper Introductio
by Georges
Hi all,
I'm Georges Dib. I'm 24 year-old Lebanese French living in London. I work in
the finance industry as a quantitative research, so developing analytics
using mostly C/C++ and python for scripting and GUI purposes.
My experience with Fedora dates from 4 years ago, when I had fedora 4 on my
home PC , and fedora 3 in my school lab. At work I run a Fedora 11 virtual
machine guest OS under a windows XP host OS, but most of the work I do is
unfortunately under Windows, and use fedora for testing purposes (the code
we develop should be platform independant, but the front end is most of the
time MS excel which is why we need windows).
I'd like to contribute to the fedora project, because enjoy using it a lot,
and would like to be part of it.
Thank you for this opportunity,
Georges

update from f11 preview
by David L
I have an f11 preview system on which I'm
trying to yum install pptp and I'm running into
various errors. I seem to recall that there is
a time window after which updating a preview
system no longer updates to f11 but instead
stays on rawhide. I want to update to f11 and
install a few packages without updating
everything because I have a 5G monthly
quota on my Verizon wireless connection.
What is the right way to update from f11
preview to f11 at this point?
I've tried editing the yum.repos.d files
to enable fedora and disable rawhide
and changing $releasever to 11, but
now I'm getting this error:
GPG key retrieval failed: [Errno 4] IOError: <urlopen error [Errno 2]
No such file or directory: '/etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-i386'>
Thanks,
David
