abrt
by Gene Czarcinski
Fedora 12 seems to have some good improvements as far as making it easy to
report bugs (send reports to bugzilla). For example, when an SELinux problem
occurs, you can send a report to BZ using setroubleshoot ... it packages all
the info, you feed it your BZ id and password and off the report goes ... neat!
Then there is the new abrt. It is suppose to detect "application" crashes and
then allow the user to report the problem ... great idea ... but ...
I may be missing something but documentation for abrt seems a bit light.
Furthermore, I do not understand how problems are handled ... or maybe I have
found some abrt bugs ... I don't know.
There are a lot of BZ reports against abrt but one that hits home to me is
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=528395
Until I saw this report, I did not know that I would need to invoke abrt-gui
as root to see a number of the reports. This should be fixed! A user should
not need to su to root and then run abrt-gui from the command line to do
reporting on things like kerneloops ... in fact, until you do this, you may be
completely unaware of such problems.
I suggest that this be fixed BEFORE F12 is released!

should broadcom BCM4318 wireless work out of the box?
by Robert P. J. Day
i ask since i'd like to finally install f12 x86_64 beta on one of my
laptops this weekend, but i might have to do it where i won't have
access to wired networking, only wireless. so if getting broadcom
wireless needs a wired connection to download anything after the
install, i'm pretty much screwed.
theoretically, what should i expect? thanks.

Testing request: possible ext4 corruption issue
by Adam Williamson
Hi, guys. Jóhann raised a concern about the potential ext4 corruption
issue that's currently under discussion upstream:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14354
the discussion between Eric and Linus tends towards the theory that this
is not affecting 2.6.31, but we'd like to have somewhat more certainty
of this.
For those who are testing F12 on disposable systems/partitions, it would
be very much appreciated if you could test this. Testing it is
relatively easy - all we need you to do is dirty power-off active
systems with ext4 partitions. If they're physical systems, yank the
plug. If they're virtual machines, do a forced power-off from the VM
interface (not a clean shutdown request). Ideally while they're writing
data. See if you can get some data corruption this way.
There's some suggested operations to reproduce this in the bug report.
e.g. Eric's reproduction method is detailed in
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14354#c141 . But basically
just suddenly powering off the system while something's writing data to
an ext4 partition is the key - ideally you know _what_ data is being
written, so you can check if it's been corrupted on the next boot.
Again, let me emphasize, since this is a potential data corruption bug,
I _hope_ it's obvious you shouldn't test it on any system or data you
actually care about :). Of course, as Dan says, any data you don't have
backed up is data you don't care about, but please bear that in mind.
For my peace of mind it'd be great if a few of you can try this and
confirm whether or not you're able to dependably cause corruption this
way.
It's also worth noting Jóhann and I both came to this report via the
somewhat dubious Ubuntu report at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/453579 , which
claims to see corruption of large files on ext4 partitions. This
upstream bug was linked from that one, though they don't look related to
me. I don't place a lot of credence in the Ubuntu report, but obviously
if anyone's observed large files being corrupted on F12 ext4 partitions,
PLEASE let us know about this. Check those sha256sums.

Showstopper: Rawhide still won't install on ATI 2600XT
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
The ATI driver is still hosed. Repeat by: load
today's Fedora 12 rawhide 64. When it gets to
the timezone setting window, move the mouse
around. After several seconds the Fedora stops
displaying city names and ignore mouse clicks.
If the time zone is set by selecting a city from the
list, the screen will go blank later, typically
during the hard drive setup.
System has an ATI 2600XT on an ECS motherboard
with AMD 6000+ CPU. I ran some 20+ passes of
Memtest yesterday without error. Ubuntu 9.10
pre-release installed and runs without difficulty.

Tame the Gnome filesystem monster!
by Tom Horsley
A while back I was trying to find out how to keep my USB backup
drive from being automounted and my other unmounted partitions
out of the annoying GTK file browser. Thanks to this thread
on the linux-hotplug mailing list I discovered the answer:
http://www.spinics.net/lists/hotplug/msg02919.html
I created /etc/udev/rules.d/99-zzz-local.rules that looks like:
ENV{ID_FS_LABEL}=="BACKUP", ENV{DKD_PRESENTATION_HIDE}="1"
Repeat that line for each disk label you want hidden, and finally
things work the way they used to work before everything
decided to become so "helpful" :-).
Note: This is unique to Fedora 12 and DeviceKit-disks, previous
fedorum used hal (which needs different xml style gibberish).
I swear there is a huge market for a 600 page book named
"Linux: Make It Stop!"
(if only I knew how to write it :-).
