ext4 filesystem, new F10 Beta Release?
by Antonio Olivares
Dear fellow testers,
I am currently running rawhide on two machines, a barebones ASUS machine(~5 yr old) and a Toshiba Laptop. I have other machines that run Fedora 9 respectively and one of them has a busted NTFS partition and I am wanting to try to keep my existing Fedora 9 partition as it is and on the NTFS partition destroy the data(since it does not boot and ntfs-3g does not mount it, even with force option) and looking to install Fedora rawhide on it, if F10 Beta Release is coming soon or attempt a network install
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f9/en_US/sn-expert-download.html
and use ext4 filesystem:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/Ext4
I have read that when installing one has to use ext4 as a boot option is that correct? How soon will F10 Beta hit the mirrors?
A friend of mine is building me a new machine (Quad Core with 4GB memory which should help in testing) and I want to test the ext4 filesystem as well. I already know about the issues running rawhide as I have been a tester since Fedora 5 Test 2 old system of releases. The Asus machine has been my main testing machine for a good while only down time was when hard drive went down, installed new one and installed another test version Fedora 6 Test version or Fedora 7 can't remember and I was back on my feet again.
I have read the documentation to attempt a net/http install but I have attempted one several times, but I get discouraged because I see many messages like repond.xml ???. Is there any nice HOW-TO for a flawless install directly from a connected network so that I can use that space(NTFS busted partition) and install Fedora 10 Beta/Rawhide. I can use Gparted/SystemRescueCD to wipe that partition clean and boot Fedora net install/net.iso media with ext4 boot option.
Thanks for answers and advice provided. If the Beta is coming soon, I will preferably wait and use it to install it on at least one of the two machines and the new one as soon as it is ready.
Regards,
Antonio

No sound - update
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Today's rsync installed via http without undue difficulty.
Unfortunately, eth0 did not appear so this rev is both
dumb and unconnected.
KDE would not initialize but the window manager with
the mouse logo did. It didn't have any audio either.
I've added an IDE drive to this computer to use as a scratch
drive for ext4 experiments. It certainly makes booting tricky;
sometimes it shows up as the first drive and sometimes as the
last.
I added a SoundBlasterLiveValue board to the other day's
Rawhide and it does make sound under Gnome. But I
could not get the dg33bu integrated sound to work.

xorg-x11-drv-ati problem?
by Clyde E. Kunkel
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD
2600 Series]
I cannot get gdm to start in rawhide unless I use older versions of the
ati driver and xorg-x11-drivers.
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-drivers xorg-x11-drv-ati
xorg-x11-drivers-7.3-9.fc10.i386
xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.9.0-14.fc10.i386
HOWEVER, if I user the radeonhd driver, all is well.
$ rpm -q xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd
xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-1.2.1-3.7.20080724git.fc10.i386
So, where is the problem? ati driver, drivers, a combination of the two
or elsewhere?
I would be more than happy to enter a bz on this, but on what package?

Continued Lack of audio
by Chuck Forsberg WA7KGX
Asus a8n-e AMD chip
Intel dg33bu Intel Core Duo
Today's Rawhide 64 still has no sound on either of these mobos.
I did hear a click in the speaker on the a8n-e as Fedora came up.
But Rawhide is not silent - the roar of the uncontrolled fan on the
Nvidia 9600gt is plenty loud.

Random system freezings on a AMD Turion X2 machine and Fedora 9.
by mhydra
Hello all,
I experience very strange kernel panics on my laptop with Fedora 9.
The kernel is 2.6.26.3-29.fc9.i686.debug but I have that problems with
other kernels too.
So, basically the machine just freezes and I hear some loud high tone
from my speakers without any reason for that. I notice that most of
the panics happen after starting of wine and some audio applications
is working, and probably they are connected. So, probably wine and
pulseaudio are the reasons of these kernel panics.
The last time I had such panic I had also a log of the panic. I have
kernel.* included in /etc/rsyslog file.
Please have a look at the attached file for the full log.
