KDE nightmare
by Jim
I went to remove the Fedora task manager at bottom left, to put the old
Task Manager Widget in place, but it isinsistant at putting it at bottom
right.
the tray and clock went over to the left.
Why couldn't they just leave well enough alone.
When I do a right click to move widgets on bottom tool bar ,nothing
wants to move where you want it to go.
Please help.
Don't these developer know when they got a good thing and to leave it at
that, This one feature that works great the old way.

Amarok+gstreamer on F9 Preview
by Patrick O'Callaghan
I use the Amarok music player. The default install only includes the
Xine engine, and there are no codecs for proprietary formats (surprise).
I dl'ed the Fluendo MP3 codec but it's for gstreamer.
Almost all my music is in MP3 or AAL format.
The usual alternative repos (Livna, Freshrpms etc.) are not yet
available for F9, naturally enough.
Is there a way to use the Fluendo codec with Amarok? More to the point,
how do I get Amarok to use the gstreamer engine? This used to work on
F8. I've installed the devel packages for gstreamer but it doesn't make
any difference.

F9 PreView Anaconda,XEN, Xorg Problems
by David M Burgess
I've just finished installing the Preview Release on three different
hardware platforms.
Big problems with them all.
I'm installing on dual core 64 bit hardware"
Lenovo T61p - dual core Intel
Asus A7N-M2 - AMD M2
Sun Ultra20 M2 - AMD Opteron
All the boxes have 2Gig of RAM and SATA drives, each box also has a
NVidia video card - different one in all three.
When Anaconda gets to part where you configure the network cards eth0
has no check mark but eth1 does and Anaconda is set to configure that by
default. A minor problem but still wrong.
Far more seriously XEN refuses to boot on any of the three platforms I
even installed the 32 bit PR on the Asus box and had a similar reaction.
With the 64 bit OS XEN begins to boot the screen displays something like
"Xen is relinquishing the VGA console" and then it simply reboots. The
32bit version hung completely at that point.
When using system-config-display to try and get dual head working I can
check the box for "dual-head" but the drop down selection box for the
"second video card" is empty. System-config-display refuses to let me
continue until I uncheck dual-head.
When I tried to update the base PR using
System->Administration->Add/Remove Software it took more than 40 minutes
to return and tell me that there were no updates nor any additional
software to install. So I installed yumex and it worked fine.
I've tried the base F9 PreView release and I've also applied all the
updates available as of 1400 UTC Sunday April 20. I'd list the exact
version numbers of X, xen, etc except I've reverted to a working Beta
box.
The Anaconda and PackageKit problems are merely irritating, the XEN and
X are show stoppers for us.
My SMOLT report/page for my ASUS box is
http://www.smolts.org/show?uuid=pub_d0142107-93e5-4cd6-be94-04837980709b
if that helps any.

How to get f9 preview to work with b43 wireless

Out of the box the f9 preview recognized that I have a b43 wireless chip
and assigned it to wlan0. Unfortunately, I couldn't activate it. Do we
still have to use b43cutter in f9?

surprising init behavior changing levels
by Joe Smith
When I have to drop into runlevel 3, or 1, for some maintenance thing,
I'm in the habit of restarting the desktop using: "telinit 5; exit" so
that I don't leave a root session running, and I don't have to switch
back to the console to log out.
This no longer seems to work for F9. No "Starting ABC [OK]" messages
appeared, and prefdm was killed for spawing too fast.
There was no reason X shouldn't start, and no logged errors, so I just
ran "telinit 3; telinit 5". This time the normal "Stopping/Starting"
messages appeared, but prefdm was not started--no desktop.
I bailed and rebooted.
Normal level shifting (i.e. without the "exit") seems to work fine, so I
don't think it's actually a bug, but I'd like to understand why the exit
borks the level shift, and see if anyone has a suggestion for another
way to re-start level 5 and log out in one shot.
