moving a fedora 7 to rawhide
by Antonio Olivares
Dear folks,
since Fedora 7 is slowly passing away, support is
ending EOL, I decided to update it to rawhide, since
Fedora 8 is not what I wanted to update it to.
I downloaded the fedora-release-8.92 rpm and installed
it and the fedora-notes which was a prerequisite for
fedora-release then I disabled fedora repo and enabled
development repo and on the journey begins.
I am following the advice from
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Testing
I have encountered a few issues, namely the kernel
does not boot --??185. I have to boot to 2.6.23.15??
only since the machine only boots two kernels I have
to resort to booting it. A few conflicts here and
there, Is there a cleanup script that checks for fc7
rpms and deletes them and finds corresponding fc9
rpms?
I know that updating a dying Fedora 7 to rawhide is
not recommended, but I said what the heck, if I get
burned, I'll just get Fedora-9-Beta media and install
from there. I just want a script if it exists and try
to sort things out and hopefully make the machine boot
into the newer kernels and get going from there.
Thanks in Advance,
Antonio

gdm login page look&feel
by Gianluca Cecchi
Is the current one intended to be also the final? And the same for final
backgrounds?
I don't hope so... f8 gdm login is much better! In my opinion obviously
Hopefully the art team will impress us....
I went also throuh http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F9Themes and f9 art
milestones... should I presume is this completed?
Thanks,

Rawhide 4th April - some observations
by mike cloaked
After today's rawhide updates I notice:
1) Immediately after booting to the KDE desktop the mouse tap works.
It continues to work fine during the KDE session without a problem.
If I logout from KDE and then log back in then the mouse tap no longer
works (it may have been this way after last night's updates also)
Rebooting and going straight into KDE then returns normal mouse function.
2) I tried plugging in a bluetooth usb adapter. The adapter is recognised
OK by the system, and I can start kdebluetooth in KDE
(service bluetooth start has been done OK at this point).
However if I ask it to search for new input device
then the bluetooth icon flashes as if it is searching but
it never finds the bluetooth mouse on which I have pushed
the reset button.

Grub bootable CD won't work on SATA CD ROM
by Clyde E. Kunkel
In the past I have used a CD-RW as a bootable grub with a grub.conf and
eltorito stage 2 as a quick rescue if for some reason couldn't boot the
system but I know all else was ok. However, after upgrading to a system
with the CD ROM on a SATA port, discovered that even tho you could boot
the grub CD-RW, all you get is the grub> prompt. Trying the disk in a
system with an EIDE CD-ROM drive, the CD-RW still worked fine. So,
stuck an USB CD-ROM drive on the SATA system and, voila, works well
(after telling bios that the USB CD drive was a boot device vice the
SATA CD drive).
So, since the upstream grub folks are focused on grub 2, would the
Fedora grub maintainer look kindly on a low priority bz on this? Given
the workaround, maybe just waiting for grub 2 is the best approach? Or,
even better, is there a quick fix that could be applied?
(I know I could use a rescue CD, but just can't stand having something
not work that should "just work.")
Thanks, and kind regards,
Old Fart

F8 GRUB cannot access F9-Beta root
by Michael Schwendt
Sigh. F9-Beta doesn't like to be tested. First, Anaconda gave a traceback
upon being told to use a GRUB device other than MBR. Then, during the next
attempt, I installed GRUB into MBR. But after restoring F8's GRUB, I found
out that it cannot access F9-Beta's root partition. That would have been
my way to boot into it from the command-line. But it fails to find
/boot/grub/grub.conf on it and errors out (2: Bad file or directory type)
even if I specify it myself. It seems to be incompatible with F9.

NM + F9 + Broadband card = rocks!
by Justin Conover
Dropped in one of my sprint air cards (usb) to F9 beta + yesterday updates.
Lights flashed, clicked on NM and connect to CDMA. Very cool! I'll test my
pcmcia card tonight.
Thanks for all the hard work!
