FC4 - Voluntary Preempt
by Brian C. Huffman
A while back, I made a post about kernel preemption and got the reply from Arjan
that FC4 kernels use voluntary preemption. How do I know this? From the
original post:
http://kerneltrap.org/node/3440?PHPSESSID=0e6e6ad73b4f1426094b67a314d86d3e
It mentions that it is tunable via /proc/sys/kernel/voluntary_preemption
and that it can be enabled or disabled via the build config option of:
CONFIG_VOLUNTARY_PREEMPT.
However, I don't see either of these. I'm running the latest update FC4 kernel
and I don't have /proc/sys/kernel/voluntary_preemption, and when I download the
source, I don't see any mention of voluntary preemption in the patches or in the
config files. Is it really there? Did it get integrated into the latest stock
kernels and isn't even configurable??
Thanks,
Brian

Check the route on your Linux box that is behaving strangely. As a
guess, the SMTP and IMAP/POP servers are set correctly (probably with an
IP address) so the system can reach the mail server(s) which then has a
valid route. For stuff that the box must resolve directly, it's having
a problem.
Another possible culprit would be the nameserver for the Linux box. If
the nameserver has changed and there is an alternate, the Linux box will
attempt to use the primary nameserver, wait for a timeout and then hit
the alternate. This has the effect of making it look like the network
is slow when, in fact, it's just a lame nameserver. This would still
explain the e-mail behavior if the SMTP/IMAP/POP servers are specified
with an IP address.
The ping behavior is odd since it should just not be able to resolve the
address of the box you're trying to ping which is a different error than
getting packet loss. Another tool to use to try to diagnose something
like this is "traceroute". The man page is excellent since it explains
both how to use it and how to interpret the results.

I opened the following bug on this. It appears to have nothing to do
with FF/TB or Mozilla, other than their using some updated component
(gtk2, etc). I didn't even update Mozilla last week and it went haywire
with the rest of the 'trio' on the instability extravaganza. Here's the
bugzilla entry: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=163692

What's happened to Firefox and Moz?
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
Prior to the update today, both were lovely and stable. I can't keep
either of them up for more than a minute or so with out them dying
silently.
What gives?

ant-jmf missing from development.
by David Bentley
Unable to update ant because of unresolvable chain of
dependacies.
Error: Missing Dependency: ant = 0:1.6.2-3jpp_10fc is
needed by package ant-jmf.
Ant-jmf is now missing from development since the
update
to ant-1.6.2-3jpp_12fc.i386.rpm etc...and you cant
uninstall ant-jmf as ant-jmf is needed by (installed)
eclipse-platform-3.1.0_fc-6.i386.
I have checked the list of broken dependancies since
ant was updated and it does not get a mention hence
this report.

Might this be related to the size of the ReiserFS file system?
I tested installs with the default partitioning (100M /boot) which worked OK.
When you had the problem were you using a larger ReiserFS file system?

Evolution and printing
by Paul F. Johnson
Hi,
Is anyone having problems when printing using the current test version
of Evolution? I'm using a DJ980cxi and all I get is a border, the odd
underline here and there and the words "Page 1 of 2" and "Page 2 of 2"
at the foot of each page.
Anyone else seeing this?

FC4/Evolution->Contacts->Ldap Servers
by Bill Petersen
I am trying to use Evolution for the first time, but don't seem to be
making much progress.
After setting up my mail account (and getting my IMAP mail ok), I was
trying to define an
existing LDAP server (which Thunderbird can see just fine). I define
the Name,
Server, Port, and Search base. But it does not remember the search base.
I do an OK, and then look at the properties for the LDAP server and the
search base
is not listed. If I click on find Possible Search Bases, it has only
one, which I had
listed previously. I click on it (and it populates the Search Base
field) and click OK,
but again when I check, it is not listed. Searches fail.
Cheers,
Bill

valgrind x86-64
by Erich Hoover
Does anyone know if there are plans to include the AMD64 version of
valgrind in rawhide? I've been using the i386:x86-64 version and it's
rather a pain to recompile things for i386 to debug them.
