Thanks Jakub! I have moved pam_sss after pam_unix in the password
management group of my system-auth per your recommendations (and the
recommendations of other people) and things work fine.

Oops, I'm sorry, I was checking another case where pam_sss seemed to be
misbehaving if it was offline while a password change was attempted and
apparently mixed the two...
I'd still recommend to use some tool to configure the pam stack,
though..
