When authenticating with a YubiKey, the SSSD PAM responder crashes inside
sss_certmap_match_cert because the sss_certmap_ctx pointer passed to it has
already been freed and reused for string data from the p11_child response.
The pointer value 0x6e65687475412056 decodes to ASCII "V Auth en" which is part
from the certificate label "X.509 Certificate for PIV Authentication" returned
by p11_child. This confirms that the freed sss_certmap_ctx memory was reused
during response parsing.
Root cause:
sss_certmap_ctx is owned by the PAM request state. If the request is cancelled
or completes while the asynchronous p11_child process is still running, the
request state (and the context) is freed. When the child eventually returns and
p11_child_done / parse_p11_child_response run, they call sss_certmap_match_cert
with a dangling pointer. The certificate data (token name, label, or
certificate contents) then occupies the freed memory.
Impact:
Denial of service: The PAM responder crashes, breaking authentication in some
cases.
Potential privilege escalation: Because an attacker controls the
smartcard/YubiKey contents, they can influence the data that replaces the freed
sss_certmap_ctx structure, turning this into a controlled use-after-free in a
privileged, long-running process (although this looks hard to exploit).

Hello,
I observe strange issue with screenlocker. I use Fedora 44 as a client machine
and log in using kerberos. I use gdm as a login manager into a plasma shell
wayland session. When logging in and in any other kerberos usage everything
works ok except for kscreenlocker_greet. When I lock the screen and unlock
after a shot time, everything works OK. But when I lock for longer time (for
example for 8 hours) the first unlock fails with kscreenlocker_greet[137368]:
pam_sss(kde:auth): received for user username: 4 (Chyba systému). The second
attempt to unlock succeeds. I have ticket lifetime long enough so this is not a
ticket expiration issue. It i worth to say that when I switch to another logged
in user using Alt+F4 and unlock the issue occurs. Also when I press Alt+F3 to
get back to the previous user and try to unlock the issue occurs without
waiting longer time.

After upgrading Fedora 43 to 44 windows domain accounts linked via freeipa
stopped working in offline mode. Also confirmed that installing fc43 packages
of sssd (v.2.12) to fc44 restores normal work. And upgrading them back to fc44
(v.2.13) restores the problem.

Disabling selinux doesn't change anything.
If access_provider=permit - same result and errors.
If sssd goes online - everything works ok, no errors.
Cleaning cache - no effect.
I compared file/forder permissions (/etc/sssd, /var/lib/sss) on fc43 (v2.12)
and fc44 (v.2.13) - didn't find any difference.

Description of problem:

We are working on getting smart card authentication working using pinpad card
readers for improved security.
To do this we use:
FreeIPA Server is running on Fedora 32 with latest updates.
FreeIPA Clients is Fedora 32 Workstation installed on pc with latest updates
with connected usb card reader.
The card reader is Gemalto CT700 with pinpad, we use several user individual
SmartCard HSM 4K with FreeIPA signed certificates on them.
FreeIPA Clients run OpenSC and are configured to use smartcard certificate
based authentication, setup per Smartare HSM best practice.
Further clients are using SSSD and not PAM_PKCS#11.
All working great using smartcard for authentication, as long not enabling the
pinpad in opensc.
If doing so we are prompted for the PIN not only in the pinpad reader but also
GDM prompts you to enter PIN on keyboard.
Expected result is to be logged in directly after entering correct PIN code on
pinpad reader, not being prompted by GDM to enter PIN on keyboard as well.
If enabling pinpad in opensc, login gets a bit odd:
1. Fedora 32 Workstation GDM menu prompts a few users that can login.
2. Smartcard is inserted in reader.
3. GDM blanks out the screen and smartcard reader prompts to enter PIN in its
lcd display.
4. Entering pin on smartcard reader followed by pressing ok button on smartcard
reader at getting result Pin OK in reader display.
5. GDM now prompts for entering PIN on keyboard, this is unexpected, instead of
directly being logged in to the window manager, here Gnome (or xfce, whatever
window manager you selected to use).
6. You have to enter the PIN now on keyboard, followed by hitting enter.
7. Once again smartcard reader now prompts for PIN in its lcd display.
8. Entering PIN on the smartcard pinpad reader followed by pressing pinpad ok
button.
9. You are now logged in, and all is normal. If ripping out the smartcard from
reader the screen locks, as expected.
Sometimes, but not always, you are logged in to window manager directly after
step 5.
What could this be, anyone who have seen this before or know how to set it up ?

Sometimes you need to enter PIN on pinpad once more after entering PIN using
the keyboard.
Expected Results:
Directly after entering correct PIN using pinpad on card reader you should be
logged in.
