I do believe that the patch is itself OK (ACK), but in my test
environment it caused some subsequent problems.
Could we wait with pushing this patch to master until/if my patches*
make it to master?

Full disclosure — Pavel showed me his patches while he was looking at the nested groups
code. I agree they are important.
