The official IdM Red Hat Documentation says on page 378

use an identity provider to supply the information for any one (or
all) of those four functions."
Shouldn't that be:
"A domain in SSSD defines four backend functions: authentication, identity lookups,
access, and password changes. The SSSD domain is then configured to use a _backend_
provider to supply the information for any one (or all) of those four functions."
If you agree, I will file a documentation bug against the current
version of the doc.
I think your version reads better to me, but I'm not a native speaker
either :) I think the original sentence got two things mixed up -- the
backend provider, as you noted, and the fact that if auth, access and
chpass providers are not set directly, then they inherit the value of
id_provider.
Anyway, please open that bug.
