For what it's worth, I use winbind + sssd as a windows fileserver and have no problems with the setup. It's true that winbind is necessary to share files but certainly SSSD can co-exist with winbind.

Hi, there is a bit of a debate going on over on the samba list,
about using sssd or winbind. It is now being said that sssd should
not be used on a file server because sssd cannot do what winbind can
do.

So here are the questions:
Just what are the differences between using sssd and winbind.
Can sssd be used on a fileserver and if not, why not.
We plan to support this setup in the next SSSD release, see e.g.
https://fedorahosted.org/sssd/ticket/1588 . The reason is that samba
itself does not only use the PAM and NSS interfaces but call winbindd
directly to get additional information which is not available in the
other interfaces.

Oh, and we are talking about an AD domain here.

Thanks for that, but ( there is always a but, isn't there ;-) ) any
idea when, I know, 'how long is a piece of string?' but ball park?
My plan is to have most of it done by the end of spring (this year,
northern hemisphere :-).
Great, a very short bit of string then ;-)

Thanks

Rowland
