I wonder if it is possilbe to tell autoconf/automake to run the
tests multiple times with different complier options?
Yes, it's possible, but ugly. You basically just need to copy-paste
the tests, change their name (e.g. krb5_utils_SOURCES becomes
krb5_utils_noopt_SOURCES) and just give different CFLAGS to the
*_CFLAGS variable.
