No problem, git can be hard to learn.

The routine would be:
* edit the files that need editing
* git add the changed files
* git commit -m "Commit message"
* git log/git log -p to review the commits
* git format-patch -1 (or hash-id) to produce a git-formatted patch

It's also worth mentioning that you would want to clone the repository
first with
