Why I use graphical applications on a server
by Samuel Sieb
I'm not subscribed to this list, but Stephen thought this might be
useful information. This is just my use case as an admin for a remote
site that runs Fedora all around. (It's a school.)
I find it very helpful to run some graphical applications on a server at
a remote site. A full desktop environment is excessive for my purposes,
so I just run vncserver with openbox. This way I can run graphical
tools remotely from systems at the site (e.g. system-config-printer). I
can view them on the vnc server without running the full X protocol over
the internet as well as being able to resume the session if I get
disconnected. I also run Firefox on the server to access local
web-based admin tools such as switches and FreeIPA. I could (and do)
use an ssh http proxy as well, but it's handy to keep the Firefox state
on the server and it's significantly more difficult to setup kerberos on
my laptop to be able to talk to the FreeIPA web interface remotely.
I originally started the server as a minimal install and that would be
sufficient for an isolated server. But I ended up going this way
because it makes managing the remote network much easier.
For future reference for anyone attempting this, after installing
tigervnc-server and openbox, the only package missing to make it useable
is xorg-x11-fonts-Type1. If you don't install that, you get some very
interesting but unreadable text. I wonder if that should be added as a
dependency to one of the base X packages.

Fedora 21 Final Release Candidate 4 (RC4) Available Now!
by Adam Williamson
NOTE: Signing of the RC4 tree is not yet complete, there are technical
issues in releng preventing it working. To strictly be sure we're
testing the right bits we should remember to check that the images we
test match the signed checksum files once they're available, and of
course you can carefully check the TLS certificate of the server when
downloading the images. fedup tests may require the --nogpgcheck
parameter until the signed .treeinfo file is available. releng will
update and close the trac ticket when signing is complete.
As per the Fedora 21 schedule [1], Fedora 21 Final Release Candidate 4
(RC4) is now available for testing. Note that RC3 never made it out of
the compose process - releng made a small mistake so they started over,
and it was easier to call the retry 'RC4' than clean up the failed
attempt and call the retry 'RC3'.
The only difference between RC4 and RC2 should be that the live images
have correct fontconfig caches. Otherwise RC4 and RC2 should be
effectively identical. There is no difference in their package sets, the
fontconfig fix was done in the kickstarts. Existing RC2 test results
will be considered valid for RC4 and transferred to the RC4 result
pages, but from now on, please switch to testing the RC4 images.
At present we're hopeful RC4 will be good enough for Final release, so
please help us get through all the testing!
Please see the following pages for download links (including delta ISOs)
and testing instructions. Normally dl.fedoraproject.org should provide
the fastest download, but download-ib01.fedoraproject.org is available
as a mirror (with an approximately 1 hour lag) in case of trouble. To
use it, just replace "dl" with "download-ib01" in the download URL.

Proposal for F22 Desktop Enviroment
by John Unland
Hello everyone,
I have been talking with Stephen about a DE for F22 and he has given
me a green light for proposing just that so here it goes:
Objective for proposal:
-To implement a desktop environment for F22 Server.
-Let the user have a choice for going to a DE or bare CLI.
-Have a GUI toolbox to diagnose hardware and networks.
Justification for proposal: The addition of a DE to F22 (x86) would
give system admins a choice of going to headless or use GUI interface.
Additionally many companies do not have the resources to have rack
cabinets or extra machines to access the Cockpit (Most of these
companies are small businesses). Also there are some software packages
that need a desktop interface to install such as Bitnami
(https://bitnami.com/) or Oracle Database, this not only applies to
open source software but proprietary software which mostly installs on
a GUI interface.
Sidenote: Even the Windows Server has a GUI and if you want to go to
just a plain CLI then you can do that. So why not Fedora Server?
Implementation: Wayland as a display server with KDE or Gnome (per
Server SIG's suggestions) as the default DE. Most of the applications
if not all will be removed including widgets and any fancy graphics.
Also this would be a great opportunity to apply some GUI tools such as
Wireshark to the DE.
Notes for KDE: KDE's "Netbook Workspace" might be a good starting
point to have since it's designed for "Quick-use", might be minimal
enough for a server environment.
Alternative DE: I would also like to propose a LXDE or LXQt as a
alternative DE because both KDE and Gnome are both heavy DE's in terms
of RAM and widgets / flair. Also there stripped enough that they will
do the job just as well as a heavily modified KDE and Gnome.
That is all, the floor is open to anyone. I am very open to
constructive criticism.

Final release announcement coordination
by Jaroslav Reznik
Hi all!
As we're getting to pretty solid RC, it's again time for release
announcement. Readiness meeting is on Thursday, would be nice to
have a draft ready for review and final version next Monday, so
text formatted and magazine versions can be prepared in advance.
Workstation seems to be pretty covered, do we have any additions
to Server and Cloud? The other thing is to get rid of all Beta
strings.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F21_Final_release_announcement
Thanks Joe for starting it and Paul for Workstation bit so
far! We had the best Alpha/Beta announcements so far, let's
continue with this high bar :).

Introduction
by Paul Calvino
Hello Fedora Server people,
I've recently joined the mailing list and wanted to introduce myself.
I've degrees in software engineering and business with post graduate in
spatial science. Spent about 10 years in local government working in all
aspects of IT from helpdesk through to server builds and software
packaging. Currently working in an asset management / spatial analyst role
working with Autodesk, ESRI and ms sql and Oracle spatial dbs.
Still do a bit of software development but mainly android mobile apps for
data collection.
I have been using Linux for the last decade at home for my workstation for
everyday computing and development and on the home server for file,
streaming media and, um, err minecraft server, for the kids of course.
Outside of IT when not taxi-ing kids to sport, social activities etc I
spend my time playing soccer and surfing and my wife and I are renovating
our home.
I am not sure how to begin and help out but I hope to be involved where
ever there is a need so please let me know how I can assist.
Regards,
Paul Calvino
