Engineering Your academic Career
by Junkins, John
Colleagues:
I call to your attention a book I have recently published which gives to-the-point career development advice to engineering academics: How to succeed with a smile! It is especially targeted on young to mid-career faculty and those considering an academic career. Insight is provided on how to time share quality teaching, research, service and mentoring with a happy personal life. Valuable tips are provided in efficiently writing successful proposals and dealing with both success and failure in the publication & proposal review process. Senior faculty will find fresh insights on how to optimize the quality of academic life. The advice I offer is drawn from lessons learned over my four decades on the faculties of the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and at Texas A&M, and in mentoring over 120 graduate students and 4 generations of PhD offspring.
See reviews at: Engineering Your Academic Career<http://www.lulu.com/browse/search.php?fListingClass=0&fSearch=john+junkins>. This short book would be a great five hour read for any professor, but your un-tenured and mid-career faculty might find it especially useful. Let me know what you think. There are several funny footnotes, including one that lampoons UT in a cute way that you might find entertaining.
Best regards,
John

CFP: RoboCup International Symposium 2012
by Peter Stone
[apologies for multiple postings, please note the changed date]
********************************************************************
Call for Papers
RoboCup International Symposium 2012
Mexico City, Mexico
June 24, 2012
http://www.robocup2012.org/
********************************************************************
OVERVIEW
The 16th annual RoboCup International Symposium will be held in
conjunction with RoboCup 2012 (June 18-24). The Symposium represents the
core meeting for presentation and discussion of scientific contributions
to a variety of research areas related to all RoboCup divisions
(RoboCupSoccer, RoboCupRescue, RoboCup@Home, and RoboCupJunior). Its
scope encompasses, but is not restricted to, research and educational
activities within the fields of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the symposium offers a unique venue
for exploring various and intimate connections of theory and practice
across a wide spectrum of research fields. The experimental,
interactive, and benchmark character of the RoboCup initiative presents
the opportunity to disseminate novel ideas and promising technologies,
which are rapidly adopted and field-tested by a large (and still
growing) community.
SUBMISSION
We solicit submissions of papers reporting on high-quality, original
research with relevance to the areas mentioned below. All researchers
working in these areas, even if not actively participating in RoboCup
teams, are urged to submit their work. Both papers describing real-world
research and papers reporting theoretical results, as well as
combinations thereof, are welcome. We also encourage the submission of
high-quality overview articles for any field related to the general
scope of RoboCup.
The proceedings of the RoboCup International Symposium are published and
archived within the Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence (LNAI) series. Submitted papers are limited to 12 pages
formatted according to the LNAI requirements (http://www.springer.com/series/1244)
and must be electronically submitted through the symposium web site:
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=robocupsymposium2012
All contributions are peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers using a
blind (but not double blind) review process.

ROS Packaging
by Brennan Ashton
As was brought up again on the Fedora Packaging list, ROS is still not
part of Fedora due to some serious build structure issues.
This is certainly not a one man packaging job, so I was interested in
seeing if there are others interested in joining in? I know last time
I built it on Fedora even just building not following the Fedora
guidelines I had to apply various patches to deal with changes in
boost.
Thanks,
Brennan Ashton
