Need advice about agent plugin design
by Steven North
I am trying to design an RHQ/JON agent plugin to manage a software
resource with the following characteristics:
- there is the software itself (the installation);
- there are a variable number of "bundles" of configuration information
about 250KB in size each which need to be read from and written to the
agent; and
- there are "log" files which can 10-50MB in size each which need to be
read from the agent.
I think I am pretty clear on how to handle the software itself--just
like any number of other agents.
I am not sure how to handle the configuration bundles and the large log
files.
We might want to have the RHQ/JON server manage different versions of
these configuration files and distribute them to multiple remote agents.
Is there some existing domain object that would handle the read/write
aspect of the configuration bundles (zip files)? Could the "package"
concept be used for these? Would we need to create a new domain object
on the server side for these bundles? If so, is there an example of
this kind of thing?
For the log files, I see some mention of the SupportFacet. Would this
be appropriate for retrieving large log files? Is there an example of this?
We expect to access the configuration bundles and the log files using
remote client operations because we have a separate GUI tool to
build/edit the configuration bundles and to correlate and analyze the
log files. Is there an example of using a remote client to pull files
from and push files to remote agents?
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give or examples you can point to.

Replace old graphs in RHQ with GWT ones. GSOC 2012
by Denis Krusko
Hello!
My Name is Denis Krusko.
I am graduate student of Siberian Federal University (Russia).
I want to work with on the idea "Replace old graphs in RHQ with GWT ones"
I need to define milestones for 3 month like (proposed Heiko W.Rupp):
- evaluate Graphing options
- implement graphing to replace what is there
- resources
---- half time --
- possibility to e.g. take two metrics and graph them in one diagram
- write documentation
- graphs for the different kinds of groups ( can be in a later phase of
the project)
- remove old code
I would be grateful for comments and ideas.
Thank You,
Denis Krusko

Fwd: Re: [jboss-as7-dev] ipv6 "usability" question

The below is useful info for when we start working on our support for
IPv6...

Hi Max,
I really hate to use [xyz] anywhere I'd like to use literal IPv6 address. IP address should be always without brackets! On the other hand, URL need brackets because URL port (+ password) delimiter is the same as IPv6 IP's group delimiter - in this case [] are needed in _every_ case, but again - only when we are using _literal_ IPv6 address, not name. In an URL brackets are important to use because ambiguity can be occurred very easily.
I hate the present (only one) possible option as ./standalone.sh ... -b [IPv6] -bmanagement=IPv6 because it is really bad and at least unprofessional... in every case we'd like to specify literal IP address, we should do this _only_ without bracket, because this is only one possible text representation...
I guess, my thought isn't accepted by majority up to now (as we can see in present AS7), but I'd like to bet future is mine...:)

Are you using the RHQ web services?
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
are you using the RHQ webservices to talk to the RHQ server?
We are thinking of possibly removing them from RHQ in the future - especially
as the REST api is getting more mature.
So we would like to know if the webservices are in use at all in order to better
determine when we can remove them.
Thanks
Heiko

A couple of enhencement requests for RHQ / JON
by Roland Brackmann
Hi list,
I have a couple of enhancement requests and feedback from a customer.
1. CLI - transactional bloc
CLI : within a script it should be possible to have an atomic block that lets you rollback on failure (at the moment it is step by step commitment)
2. POC (proof of concept) or PROD configuration
2.1. "metric collection templates"
In JON server "metric collection templates" are preconfigured enabled/disabled. The proposed configuration in RHQ/JON does not necessarily fit to production environments. It would be interesting to have a choice when installing JON wheather to enable many metrics in sort of a POC configuration, or to enable less metrics in a PROD configuration.
2.2. Agent configuration
It would be also interesting to have the same configuration for the agent with a POC / PROD conf., meaning in one case the agent is sending back infos every 10 secondes (POC) in the other case every 30 min or so(PROD).
3. More examples
3.1. It would be intersting if more javascript examples would be shipped with the project/product. Every important GUI operation should be implemented as a cli exemple.
3.2. A simple bundle should be preconfigured. Idea : a bundle that puts a file somewhere !
4. The bundle deployment process via GUI is considered too complicated
5. Enhence import-export capability
It would be great to have an import-export capability for "Alert definition templates" or "Alerts". As of today only metrics and configuration can be im- and exported !
6. Database maintenance process
The nighly database maintenance is set to midnight (0h). This should be parametrizable in the GUI. /java/org/rhq/enterprise/server/scheduler/jobs/DataPurgeJob.java
Bests

*** FYI *** build errors in several modules due to upgrade of antrun plugin - now fixed
by Ian Springer
Yesterday afternoon I upgraded the antrun plugin in the root pom
(http://git.fedorahosted.org/git?p=rhq/rhq.git;a=commitdiff;h=b1c04feceb).
I did this, because I needed a newer version of Ant for an antrun
execution in the as7 plugin pom. I didn't realize until an hour ago that
the upgrade caused the following modules to start failing to build:
enterprise/agentupdate
enterprise/remoting/cli
enterprise/server/sars
enterprise/server/container
I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused people. Next time I
upgrade a plugin in the root pom, I will make sure to do a full clean
rebuild before committing the change (others please do the same).
The build errors are now fixed in HEAD of master - just do a git pull. I
would have fixed this yesterday if I had seen the errors in Jenkins, but
for some reason, the errors did not occur in Jenkins...

Itest failures in as7 plugin - any ideas?
by Heiko W.Rupp
Hi,
I am locally running mvn verify -DskipTests=false -Pas7.itest -Das7.url=file:///devel/jboss-eap-6.0.0.ER8.zip
and am constantly getting:
Failed tests: arquillianBeforeTest(org.rhq.modules.plugins.jbossas7.itest.standalone.StandaloneServerComponentTest): org.rhq.test.arquillian.impl.AbstractAnnotatedMethodExecutor.getApplicableTestMethodsAndOrder(Ljava/lang/annotation/Annotation;)Lorg/rhq/test/arquillian/impl/AbstractAnnotatedMethodExecutor$ApplicableTestMethodsAndOrder;
Tests run: 73, Failures: 1, Errors: 0, Skipped: 72
The failure happens even before org.rhq.modules.plugins.jbossas7.itest.standalone.StandaloneServerComponentTest#testStandaloneServerDiscovery
Does anyone have an idea?
I pretend this has always worked and I have not changed anything :->
Thanks
Heiko
