Well, I think they should remain for a while longer (but perhaps not
in
the powershell/windows2008 implementation of this API).
The shortness of the "short period" of retention is largely determined by
memory pressure. We use a SoftReference-based cache that won't explicitly
evict the Action resource for two hours as currently configured, but will
allow it to be reaped before that if necessary (at the discretion of the
garbage collector).
I do not like the redirect: it should just fail with 410 Gone.
The idea of the redirect was to capture the following idea: "we no longer
know the outcome of this individual action, but the current state of the
resource may give you a clue as to what the outcome may have been".
So for example if the original action was to shutdown a VM, and the Action
representation is reaped before a tardy client queries its outcome, then the
current state of the VM being SHUTOFF would indicate that the either the
original action succeeded, *or* a prior/subsequent shutdown succeeded, *or*
the VM was never running. Either way the desired end state has been reached,
so the client doesn't need to replay the action to be sure it was applied.
Now of course the state currently being RUNNING wouldn't necessarily tell us
that a past shutdown action failed, as the VM may have been restarted in the
meantime. But the point is that the current state of the target entity is a
reasonable fallback for the client to consider if the outcome of the action
is unknown.
Cheers,
Eoghan
