Summary: Pentium is said to be supported, but the build is for
i686
Product: Fedora Documentation
Version: devel
Platform: i586
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: high
Priority: low
Component: release-notes
AssignedTo: relnotes(a)fedoraproject.org
ReportedBy: goeran(a)uddeborg.se
QAContact: kwade(a)redhat.com
CC: eric(a)christensenplace.us, wb8rcr(a)arrl.net
Classification: Fedora
The release notes for F12, at least the Swedish PO file I'm currently
translating, has a message
#. Tag: para
#: HardwareOverview.xml:65
#, no-c-format
msgid ""
"The following CPU specifications are stated in terms of Intel processors. "
"Other processors, such as those from AMD, Cyrix, and VIA that are compatible "
"with and equivalent to the following Intel processors, may also be used with "
"Fedora. Fedora &PRODVER; requires an Intel Pentium or better processor, and "
"is optimized for Pentium 4 and later processors."
But rawhide is built for i686, which I thought translated to Pentium 4. So I
didn't think a "plain" Pentium was supported any longer.
Have I confused the meaning of these i?86 numbers, or is it a bug in the
release notes?

it's somewhat complex because the exact type of installation being carried out,
and whether the target is a virtual machine or bare metal, affect things. It's
sufficiently complex that I'm not sure we can confidently put it into nice
convenient 'minimum' and 'recommended' boxes.
I think we can say bare minimum for i386 is 128MB and x86-64 is 256MB (I
believe that's what we already say), but it would be best to be very clear that
in some cases even this will not be enough. 'Recommended' is a fairly unclear
word.

The install guide - at least for the past couple of iterations referred the
'minimum memory' issue to the Release Notes, and the IG has nothing other than
a pointer there. Indeed the link you reference above is a beat location for the
Release Notes, so I'm changing the componet to RN.
Thanks

fedora_requires_release_note granted: [Bug 517491] Anaconda fails if filesystem should be shrunk

Bug 517491: Anaconda fails if filesystem should be shrunk
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=517491
------- Additional Comments from David Cantrell <dcantrell(a)redhat.com>
I'd like to address this bug in rawhide, which means at this point it's a bit
too late for Fedora 12. However, I'd like to add something to the release
notes explaining what this problem is.
"Format failed: 4" means the filesystem resize operation failed because the
errors discovered on the filesystem were not able to be automatically
corrected. The installer does not try to force correction of these errors, as
that could lead to data loss. Instead, you should boot in to rescue mode or
another operating system and see what the problem with the filesystem is.
