So, finally upgraded the laptop from the .541 (2.6.8) to the latest:

Now, pmud from dwmw2's tree (built on FC2) installs fine, and the following is what I get in /var/log/messages (and no, my laptop doesn't sleep now):

This is me testing on an iBook 2.2 g3, with definite sleep support previously (well, on-and-off, but it worked). Anyone else played with it?
