I'm in a spot and could use your help.
This Thursday I'll have a chance to demo a website package to a
client. The demo I plan is Apache/MySQL/PHP based and will just be a
dummy site run on a laptop.
Today, Saturday, I have no laptop. :P
My options seem to be:
1. Try to get the software working on my wifes Mac OS X
machine.
2. Get an X86 based laptop from Compusa (Comapq/HP/Sony) and
put Red Hat on it.
3. Blow off the Demo.
4. Get a Mac and try to get Fedora PPC to run on it.
1. Has been holding me up for a week. I'm not a programmer by trade
and this is a side job so most of my time goes to my day job.
If you can not get it working on OS X, what makes you think getting it
working on Linux will be easier? If what you need is a basic LAMP
(Linux Apache MySQL PHP) then substituting OS X for Linux should just
work in most cases - if you don't know why it isn't working on OS X
then there is a good chance you won't get it to work on Red Hat /
Fedora. Sorry to be blundt - but it's not a programming thing, it's a
setup/sysadmin thing.
2. Lesser hardware quality for a premium price, or so it seems.
Lesser hardware if you mean only has one mouse button :p
My Thinkpad has 3 mouse buttons :D
3. Would rather make a sale, it seems to help business. :)
Yes - Apple Laptops can help make a sale because they look classy.
There are also classy looking PC laptops.
4. And here I am seeking knowledge...
Can I run Fedora PPC on a Mac laptop?
Yes - but how smooth/easy install is may depend upon the model.
http://www.bytebot.net/geekdocs/ibook/fedorappc.html says yes, but
with some caveats. My needs are:
GUI (Gnome or KDE)
Works fine.
Web broswer
Works fine (Mozilla and friends, Konq, etc.)
MySQL, recent stable
Works fine. But also does in OS X
PHP, 4.3.x
Works fine. But also does in OS X
Apache 1.3.x
Works fine. But also does in OS X
C compiler since the above may need some re-configuring.
Works fine. But you should not need a C compiler to "re-configure"
unless you need some obscure apache or php module.
10/100 wired
Works fine. Also does in OS X
wireless
Works better in OS X. A lot of wireless cards will only work in Linux
using NDISWrapper, which requires an x86 cpu. If wireless is a need, go
with OS X on PPC for the time, or Linux on x86.
Modem
I have no clue, other than it should work in OS X :p
