I'm not sure I'm happy with it, but it is the most immutable
way.
As for jj2000, the usual thing we try to do is to get upstream to accept the
changes if possible so we can use the system version.

More project (e.g.
http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/software/tds/ aka thredds aka
netcdf-java submodule grib ) use a proper mod of the same library. your
suggestion s not applicable for various reasons, in addition to those listed in
the upstream site
