snapshot madness
by Mikus Grinbergs
Disclaimer: I am not asking for help; I am sharing my experiences.
Very strange (but non-reproducible) thing happened. I have an os13 XO-1
system which I use as a data repository - always up; never rebooted. I
noticed that its X-session was blank (and unresponsive) - I shut the
system down from the text console. On reboot, I saw that the Journal
was chock full with many hundreds of "Snapshots" -- all of them blank.
It might have been that something got inadvertently placed on the
keyboard which kept both 'alt' and '1' depressed - but when I
experimented, that produced only a single snapshot. If not external,
then it appears that the software must have run wild.

Can you tell us the output of uname -a, to confirm you got the new
kernel in place?
cheers,

Hi Tiago,

Yeah, this required a new olpc-utils package that didn't make it into
the build. It'll get in the next one.
Thanks,
- Chris.

Thanks! Closed as duplicate of #9913, let's move there. ;-)
The Sugar code doesn't see changes to the volume control made by other
applications. The Sugar code was designed to control the volume
itself. Sugar would have to subscribe to the mixer changes. I've
checked, and there's no open ticket in sugarlabs.org for this.

i'll take a look at this, but please file a trac ticket. to clarify --
when you use the keys, is the volume changing? is the widget changing?
neither?

Record-67 in os121
by Mikus Grinbergs
Disclaimer: I am not asking for help; I am sharing my experience.
Tried Record-67 in os121 -- no improvement over either previous versions
of Record or previous versions of the operating system build.
Photo panel - I'm satisfied with this capability -- though the result is
*substantially* darker than a photo taken with Record-67 on os13
(brought up to date by manually installing all the latest rpms).
Video panel - video recording worked, but (by default?) quite poor
picture quality. Did NOT have any sound on playback. Could use Browse
to look at the output object (but picture only snapshot-size). Etoys
displayed output object as text, not as video.
Audio panel - except within Record, could not playback output object.
Neither Browse not Etoys could open the output object.

the old keypad behavior gets too sensitive
by Mikus Grinbergs
I usually operate my XO with an external USB trackball, and have no
problem with cursor positioning. Lately I've often needed to operate
XOs (hdw early G1G1, but F11 build) with the native keypad, and I can
appreciate the many complaints I have heard about using the old keypad.
In my case, the keypad exhibits too much sensitivity. Whenever the
humidity is low, just waving my fingers half an inch above the keypad is
enough to result in cursor position movement. And the cursor jumps both
as I am bringing a finger (through the air) down onto the keypad, AND
when I am lifting the finger (through the air) away from the keypad.
[Also, just placing a finger at the "mouse buttons" at the bottom of the
keypad is often enough to cause the cursor position to change.]
Leaving the keypad alone (to give it time to self-calibrate) does not
seem to help. The four-finger recalibrate works, but its effect soon
"wears off", and the keypad goes back to being "too sensitive" again.
Are there any software parameters that I can play with, to try to
"dampen" the unwanted cursor position changes that I'm seeing ?
Thanks, mikus
