Short Intro...
by Michael J. Knox
Just a quick hello.
I saw Patrick's call for mentors on the devel list, so I thought I would
put my hand up.
I am a bit of a "jack of all trades" I spent 3 years with Lycoris, build
Desktop/LX until it was bought by Mandriva.
Packaging is something I do fairly well, only recently became sponsored
for FE contributions.
I am OK with languages like C/C++ (have work on network traffic
generation libraries and written a FreeBSD kernel driver), php, basic
python and what not.. I am also (very ashamed to admit) that I even know
Delphi ;)
So happy to mentor where ever I can.
Thanks!

Is this the right way to respond? [Fwd: Re: seeking bugtriage help]
by David Eisenstein
Hi fellow mentors and mentees,
I received this email on Monday, April 11, from Abhishek. This is the first
time I have been approached as a mentor. I have merely dipped my toe into the
Triage project, so am not very well informed about it, but did my best to answer.
Since we're all kind of new to this, I thought I'd ask for a critical review
of my response to Abhishek, as well as to let the general mentor community
know about his request in case someone else here can respond more fully than I
have.
Is this response okay? Are there things I missed saying that I should have,
or things I said I shouldn't have? Was it too long? Too short? Should I
forward his request to the fedora-triage-list or let him be responsible for
making contact there, as I suggested below?
I appreciate your input. Thanks a bunch!
Warm regards,
David Eisenstein

Hello Abhishek,
I apologize for how long it has taken me to respond to your query.
The Fedora Triaging (or "Bug Squad") team's primary mission "is to track down
and shoot bugs in http://bugzilla.redhat.com/ that are related to Fedora and
act as a bridge between users and developers," according to their page on the
wiki.
You can find out more information about triaging bugs for the Fedora project
by visiting their web-page <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers>, or
visiting the #fedora-triage IRC channel on irc.freenode.net. I understand
that Fridays are the triage team's "bug days" on the #fedora-triage channel,
but there are usually people there in the channel who can answer your
questions most days. (You may have to be patient, though, as many folks on
Fedora-related channels may be busy doing other things and may not answer
right away. At least that's been my experience there.)
There is also a mailing list you can write to, <fedora-triage-list(a)redhat.com>
to ask people there how to help out. If you would like, I will be happy to
forward your query on to the list, in case there are some folks there who have
better answers than I have. (I happen to belong to that list.) Or, you can
subscribe yourself to that list by visiting this page:
I myself work with the Fedora-Legacy group, doing some triaging/discerning/
reporting of security-related bugs in Red Hat's Bugzilla, as well as
occasionally building revised packages and doing QA work on packages. The
Fedora Legacy Project "provides security and critical bug fix errata packages
for select Red Hat Linux and Fedora Core releases after they reach their
end-of-life, thus extending their effective lifetime." If it sounds
interesting to you, you can find out more about Fedora Legacy at our wiki
page: <http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Legacy>.
If there are any further questions you have or things I can do to be helpful
to you as you get acquainted with the Fedora project, please feel free to
write to me. If I am online on the freenode IRC network, you are welcome to
talk to me there (I usually use the nickname "Questor" or "Questor_" there on
IRC).
Thank you for writing!
Warm regards,
David Eisenstein

MENTORS: some feedback, please. :)
by Greg DeKoenigsberg
All,
I've created a draft of a new mentors page. A little simpler, with
contact information more readily available. Please take a look and let me
know what you think:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/MentorsVersionTwo
I also introduce here the notion of "rave reviews". Yes, I realize that
any "rating system" can be gamed, but I think it's important that people
who give their time as mentors have the opportunity to be recognized.
In any event, whatever we decide we'd like the Mentors pages to look like,
I think it's time to:
1. Verify that everyone on the mentors page still wants to be a mentor,
so that we have a solid base we can count on.
2. Start advertising the presence of the mentors page heavily. Mairin put
together a great mockup for something we could put in the nav bar; I'd
like to implement that, or something similar.
3. Start recruiting heavily for new mentors, with a focus on expanding the
areas of expertise for mentoring. More translation/localization mentors,
more international members, more free Java mentors, more mentors
generally.
Just some ideas. I'd love to move forward with them, but only if you all
think the changes are useful.
