Hiya,
So we've been discussing the screenshots and we seem to agree that the wiki isn't a good place that we should be directing users to. Here's an alternative plan that I'd like feedback on:
1. Collect all the screenshots we can on the wiki as usual. 2. About release time, have a "Fedora 23 Workstation screenshot tour" post on the Fedora magazine where we use the best images from the wiki collection. This post could have a "see other DEs" that links to the wiki if we manage to get screenshots of KDE and so on. I vaguely recall wordpress having a gallery plugin (if this is needed at all). 3. getfedora.org has a "Take a screenshot tour link" on the workstation product page that links to the Fedora magazine post.
The idea being that we show users screenshots, but we don't point them to the wiki directly since the wiki isn't as posh as getfedora.org or fedoramagazine. Having a link to the wiki on the fedoramgazine post also ensures that people are sort of aware of the library. We can even have say "Feel free to use these screenshots in your posts. They're all under the CC license".
Comments?
+1 to this idea, the less we add to the wiki ( that needs to be cleaned/purged) is best I think.

Not opposed to this general idea from the websites POV except that our websites are translated and AFAIK magazine posts are not?

I would love to add a translate plugin to the magazine ( once it passes staging) I know there was some effort in this and then it fell the wayside. If anyone wants to suggest a few translate plugins that have good ratings I would be happy to add them and give out the stg url. I am all for the localization.

Would the translate plugin enable contributed translations from translators or would it pass through something like babelfish or translate.google?

Yeah. Magazine posts aren't.
We could have a screenshot tour with language specific screenshots on an additional page on the website itself, but that'll mean setting up a new page that will have to be maintained and updated per release.
I'm also not at all confident if we'll be able to manage screenshots in all the languages that the site is translated into. It *may* just be possible if we pick a really small set of screenshots, but if we have as many as this[1] per language, it's going to be quite difficult.
(zoglesby told us in the irc channel that this was why the docs didn't have too many screenshots either - they're supposed to be translated into 44 languages or thereabouts.)

This sort of thing is unnecessary and uncalled for. If you're on this list, you subscribed.
Nevertheless, I'm unsubscribing you - and setting your email address to disallow further subscription.

I think the minimum to avoid being too jarring is to just have the screenshots taken of Fedora running in the default language, but to have the description of the screenshots in the user's language. Might be able to get away with an auto-translation through something like babelfish or translate.google (or offer a prominent redirect to the page viewed on those sites.)
I don't want to kill a good idea with too much complexity / overheard, just more trying to point out linking directly from a translated website to an untranslated one can be a jarring experience and we should account for that in some way (doesn't have to be the ideal, what-we'd-all-like way, just something that shows some consideration)

Also, one can get confused if your desktop doesn't match the screenshot. We all like to tweak :)
Anyway, screenshots seem popular, a lot of tech bloggers out in the wild do nothing but, so people apparently look for them. I wonder, though - where are images served from? Could they come from a proxied location to save load on the WP instance?
