For my printer Canon Pixma iP4600 series (which works pretty well under Windows7 and Windows10), I downloaded the attached driver in order to install it also under Linux Fedora LXDE (iP4600_RPM_printer.tar).
But, unfortunately, there was no driver to find in the comfortable and easy-to-install RPM-format; and the one I found is in TAR-format which does not help me. In the end, after hours and hours of unsuccessful trying, I am still unable to get around with the TAR-format.
I know that it is possible to make a RPM-driver from a TAR-driver. Can anyone of you do this for me? Thanks so lot.

Hi Andreas, unfortunately I do not know anything about this process. However, you may be able to ask on users@lists.fedoraproject.org to receive more wide coverage on this since it seems like this an issue that can go beyond laptops specifically.
Good luck in finding what you're looking for!
Well, first you should learn about the tar command.
It's an archive similar to zip, but w/o compression.
I'd start in a terminal with $ tar -tf iP4600_RPM_printer.tar to see what files are i the archive. Then to extract the files $ tar -xf iP4600_RPM_printer.tar
I tried it with Windows tools but only see one file. a 1.5MB file named cnijfilter-ip4600series-3.00-1.i386
I'm guessing the tools I have are stripping of the .rpm extension. But, the tar file is 7.5MB so I'm thinking the tools is screwing up.
And I found this thread about the Canon drivers. http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1773583
So first you need to find the common package from Canon too. It may be in that tar ball, but I can't tell.
The package from Canon is only 1.6MB http://support-vn.canon-asia.com/contents/VN/EN/0100160102.html So you need the common package too http://support-vn.canon-asia.com/contents/VN/EN/0100159804.html

I think it's far more likely that the .i386 file is a binary installer, in order to run it you will need to chmod +x the file so it has the execute permissions. I suspect you will need to be root to do this so use sudo, you will need sudo to run the installer too.
If I had a live CD/USB drive to get to Linux right now I would test. But I expect a package named iP4600_RPM_printer.tar to contain an RPM file. I think it's a stupid windows tools stopping after the first dot in the filename. And one of the 2 files I linked from Canon is cnijfilter-ip4600series-3.00-1.i386.rpm I found an alternate file of the same name on a Canon server. http://files.canon-europe.com/files/soft31331/software/iP4600_RPM_printer.ta... I'll try some other tools later as I only have one tool that claims tar support on my machine currently. Of course you could try too. It's not a big file or take long, even with the crappy internet service here in Afghanistan. I just didn't have time to look/try more last night.

Right, that tar file has 2 rpms and one tar.gz file in it, so you should be able to install the rpms on a Linux system.
If you want a tool that can look at things properly on Windows then I suggest 7zip.
