Can not install Fedora 16 on Dell Latitude D620
by Ole Skartveit
I have downloaded several flavours of Fedora 16 and burned DVD/CDs. When I try to boot from the CD/DVD on my Dell Latitude D620 I get the first caracter based message that it will start Fedora in xx seconds. Then the text dissapears and after a while two lines with some kind of bars pops up, and that is all.
If I put the same CD/DVD into another PC (a desktop) it boots up from the CD/DVD and all works as expected.
Is the Dell D620 laptop not supported for Fedora? I would appreciate any help.
Regards
Ole

Hi Everyone:
My Machine: Toshiba NB 305 (Netbook), 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HD, installed Fedora 16 (3.1.0-7.fc16.i686) to external USB hard disk (Toshiba 80GB). Boatloader also installed to external HD. Two partitions, root and swap.
Problem: Install went well. On first boot (and all subsequent), received following error:
"Loading initial ramdisk
1. 175159 Initramfs unpacking failed: junk in compressed archive
Kernel panic - not syncing: no init found
try passing init= option to kernel"
Remarks: Running from the liveusb stick works well, no problems.
Thanks for any help.

Re: GNOME 3 Freezing
by Anthony Vanover
Thanks for the info Camilo. The "noveau" driver seems to be a component
there though. So that's not my bug. But, I did perform an update
recently and GNOME hasn't freezed since. I'm not sure what bug it was,
but the update fixed it.

That may be related, but it's definitely not the nouveau driver in my

Re: laptop Digest, Vol 69, Issue 1
by chandrakant pushkar
I do use my laptop for some heavy number crunching, but the freezing of the
screen is independent of any operation, it can occur in few minutes or
after few hours, there may be some program running or not. I am still not
able to figure out really why this occur.
I tried using the keyboard short-cuts etc. assuming that its just the
screen which freezed, but none of the operations worked as far as i have
tried. numlock, caps lock are working fine.
I tried logging out of session, bringing up the terminal and gave some
commands. but none worked, only thing i could do is ctrl+alt+F3 and then
tried killing gnome and restarting but it do not restart. only one option
is to restart the system, and i hate that.
Please suggest some actions which i could try or some possible solutions.

GNOME 3 Freezing
by Anthony Vanover
For some reason, Fedora freezes after an unspecified amount of time. I'm
able to move the mouse but everything else is unresponsive. So I just
switch to console <CTRL>+<ALT>+<F2> and use "killall -s HUP gnome-shell"
in root shell (#). Haven't tested any of the other Desktop managers but
I'm pretty sure this is the only one.

My CPU architecture doesn't support 64-bit. I would say that I do high
I/O Operations though. I have a 2TB Seagate external HDD and often move
~60 gigs or so around, compress about that amount in 7z (encrypted),
bulk rename thousands of files, and some other things with scripts.
Also, I usually have several tabs in Firefox when this happens. If it
were lack of CPU though; I'd expect the effect to be immediate, but I
have the tabs open for a while without issue.
